Carroll Truss Obituary

TRUSS, DR. CARROLL V., It is very appropriate that our father - Dr. Carroll Truss passed away on the Dr. Martin Luther King Holiday, as they were true kindred spirits. Carroll was 85 years old. Born in 1921, Carroll was raised in Birmingham Alabama with his brother C. Orian Truss. Carroll entered college at the age of 15. Known affectionately as "Father Truss," he studied a range of subjects from comparative religions to electrical engineering. In 1957 he obtained a PhD in Industrial Psychology from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. In 1943 he met a beautiful young lady named Dorothy Crim while attending a USO event at the BPOE ELKS lodge #948, located on Flagler Street in downtown Miami. He joined this club in 1980, where his survivors celebrated his life's achievements on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007. Dot and Carroll had 3 kids - Marty, Don and Cindy. He enjoyed his 8 grandchildren: from Marty - Michelle (Firinski) and Michael (Truss), from Don - Brian, Jennifer and Annie, and from Cindy - Rachael, Tommy and Nickie. He also enjoyed his 2 great- grandchildren - Christopher and Casey Firinski. Carroll was a dedicated contributor to our community, both as a full professor at the University of Miami, and as an active member of numerous civic organizations. The list is long, and includes 25 years of teaching as a Naval Reserve Officer, Membership in The Army/Navy Club, The Iron Arrow Honorary Society, The Optimist Club, The Elks, The Local Chamber of Commerce, The American Psychological Association, The American Association for the Advancement of Science, The University of Miami Retirees Group, and The Miami Marine Council. He was an election volunteer, a member of The University Yacht Club, an avid boater and Hurricane's Football Fan. A champion for the common man, he always looked for ways to teach and to be of service to our global community. His example of compassion and empathy for all will be sorely missed by all who knew him as we did. To visit this Guest Book Online, go to www.MiamiHerald.com/obituaries.

To all of the family, my deepest sympathy for your loss. Mr. Truss was a great man, a great neighbor and was very dear to me. When I visited, he was there offering me any advice or helpful tips to help me through any decision I happen to be facing at the time. He was always so positive and made me feel like I could always make it through. He will be missed.

I was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences when Carroll retired from the University of Miami. We had a number of wonderful conversations. He always had ideas about how to improve things. I am sorry for your loss.

I remember Carroll fondly, since my early days on the UM faculty. My warm wishes and sympathies are extended to his family. He was a great guy and a distinguished psychologist.

My grandfather (Carroll's brother) was reminiscing the other day about the summer they spent playing catch in the front yard. Carroll would catch for Orian's pitches, "as long as I wanted" he said, and all that practice led their team to be the best in the city!

We enjoyed meeting Carroll a few years ago through the University Yacht Club. I often encouraged him to tell me of his WWII experiences which were quite interesting. A good man who lived a complete life. We will miss him.

Chellie here. I am so greatful to have had a grandfather as brilliant as Grandpa Truss. As most of you know I am the oldest Grandchild, and have had many years to get to know him and soak up all of his wisdom. :O) My memories of grandpa are... Every time I would see him, he would ask me "Young lady are you losing weight?" My answer would always be, "No grandpa but, I love you for the thought". The other memory that my brother Michael Truss and I both have is the "Grandpa Truss driving school." He would always put us on his lap and let us drive the car when we were little, like he did with most of the grandkids. When he had a cold coming on, he would swear you should load up on vitamin C and then you would find him walking around the house with a tennis towel around his neck and tube socks on his hands. Whatever works right!
My love always to grandpa!

Dear Marty, Donny, and Cindy. My deepest sympathies. Like our father I know yours always seemed to be a little larger than life. Both brothers were probably overachievers thus hard on kids to live with. But I know he loved yall and same back.

I loved being with your father and your mother everytime you came to Birmingham. Your father was such a playful, smiling uncle and added life to any room he entered. We will miss him.

With my own children and now with my patients at children's hospital, I use Uncle Carroll's tip to calm an unhappy infant by placing them on your hip/with one hand pressed against their abdomen...works every time. He also introduced me to boating as a little girl and I love it still today. I always remember Uncle Carroll with a smile on his face and a little tip or piece of advice to share. His memory will be a blessing for generations to come.

I haven't seen either Carroll or Dot in many years, but I do remember thinking that both were wonderful people. I remember when I was just a little girl, Cindy and Jim (my cousins) and Carroll and Dot would join all of our family up at Aunt Nancy and Uncle Tom's cabin. Carroll would always give me a big hug and tell me how much I had grown. And though I didn't see him often or know him that well, I could tell he was a wonderful man and he always made me feel special when I did see him.

I enjoyed meeting and sharing family time with Carroll on visits to Florida & when he visited his daughter (married to my nephew) in "cold" Wisconsin. Political and business discussions were a good time.

It was really great to go to Miami and see all of the people who cared that much about my grandpa. It was fun to hear all of the memories that people shared. Here is mine: Whenever I would go to visit him and my grandma, he would always remember that I pitched for my softball team. He would always try to coach me on how to do it right. (he taught me how to pitch slowpitch, and I pitch fastpitch, but it was the thought that counts right? :) ) It was really special that he would remember that.

My Dad was an amazing person. My Mom, brother's Marty and Donnie and myself, Cindy, and all of our children would like to thank everyone for their condolences for my Dad's passing. Please leave entries in this guest book and share stories and memories for us to have and share with his grandchildren! We are all really going to miss him. Thank you.
