Charles Wheeler

WHEELER, CHARLES BOWEN, (82) died peacefully at home in Miami December 22. Charles (Chuck) was born in Toronto, Canada in 1931 and lived there until he won a Marsden Foundation Scholarship to Stanford University , graduating Phi Beta Kappa with an MS in Geology. He started in Standard Oil's lab in Tulsa in 1953; worked in exploration and management in Oklahoma, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Coral Gables, New York, and Houston ending as a senior VP of Exxon USA. Charles lived in Miami from 1973-79 and 2004-2013. He golfed at Riviera Country Club and achieved Life Master rank in bridge alongside wife Lynn. He loved to travel anyplace in the world, spoke fluent Spanish and good French and had an open mind to all cultures. He loved fly fishing, birdwatching, food and wine, photographing wildlife; and he never lost his passion for stratigraphy. But his favorite activity was family gatherings which he orchestrated with great care and love. Chuck's rich network of friends extends from Miami to Houston, South America and across the globe. He is survived by Lynn Grentner Wheeler, loving wife of 17 years; brother Joe Wheeler; daughters Kate, Margaret and Kristan (with Jan Moses); grandchildren Morgan, Caleb, and Alma; beloved stepchildren Brent Lambert and Kim Tolle (with Carole Lambert) and their families; and sons-in-law David Large and David Guss. Charles will be sorely missed for his wit, clear mind, and kind touch. There will be a small family gathering graveside in Connecticut next spring. Donations to Audobon Society.
