Dan Marino Obituary

Three years ago, when Dolphins great Dan Marino gave his Hall of Fame induction speech, he told his father that he was his hero, his role model and the best coach he ever had. On Saturday, that man, the one who had the greatest influence on Marino's life, died following a battle with cancer.

Dan Marino Sr. was 71.

''My dad was the most loving father, grandfather and husband,'' the Dolphins' former quarterback said Sunday in a statement. ``He was also a friend to everyone and best coach anyone could ever have.''

Marino's father, who raised his son in Pittsburgh, was living in Weston until his death.

''I'll always remember the times that we'd just sit and talk about football and about life,'' Marino said about his father during his Hall of Fame induction speech in 2005. ``You taught me how to treat people the way you want to be treated. You would always say that you didn't deserve anything in life; you only deserve what you earn.

``My only hope is that Claire [Marino's wife] and I could pass on those important values to our children. Thank you, dad. My dad would always tell me that no one does it better. Well, let me say that no one is better than you.''

Marino Sr. was also the man who introduced his son to football, teaching him the fast throwing release that became the quarterback's signature. Marino recalled during his Hall of Fame induction a special trip they made together to Canton, Ohio, home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, when Marino was 10.

''I started playing football when I was 10 years old,'' the quarterback said. ``That year my father and I took a short drive to a very special place, 90-minute drive from Pittsburgh to Canton, Ohio, where I spent the day with him at the Hall of Fame. To think now that 33 years later I'm actually here with my mother, my dad, my family, teammates, friends, being inducted into the Hall of Fame, it's overwhelming and an incredible honor.''

Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga said in a statement that the team was saddened to learn of the death of Marino's father.

Huizenga says ``he was one of the team's biggest fans ever since we drafted Dan in 1983.''

Marino Sr. is survived by his wife Veronica, his son, Daniel (Claire), his two daughters, Debbie (Mark) Berger, Cindi (Larry) Richert, Eleven grandchildren; Erica Edwards, Daniel Marino, Michael Marino, Joe Marino, Zack Richert, Emily Richert, Ali Marino, Lia Marino, Niki Marino, Cale Berger, Max Berger, and one great grandchild Ryder Edwards.

A funeral mass will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church 1301 SW 136th Ave. in Davie. In Pittsburgh, a visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at John N Elachko Funeral Home, 3447 Dawson St. and a funeral mass Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Regis Catholic Church.

Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Pittsburgh.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Dan Marino Foundation, P.O. Box 267640, Weston, 33326.

Pappy

My main man! I miss you so much, more and more every single day. You were my world and my hero. You were always there to talk when I needed a friend and you always made things better. You always gave me the best advice and no one is quite like you. You never once said you were having a bad day or that you were in a bad mood. You always had a smile on your face and were always making people laugh. Your humor and smile was infectious. I never had a dull moment with you and I loved every minute I ever got to spend with you. You are my hero and my best friend. I miss you more and more every single day and it gets harder and harder for me to actually believe you are gone. Watch over me from heaven and help me to become the person you were...help me make wise decisions and help me be strong. And please help Grandma, she really misses you a lot, help her through this tough time. I love you like crazy...I'm looking at a picture of you hanging out by your pool at the old house. You loved that and I remember when I got you to finally come in the pool with me that was the best day of my entire life...you always tried to steal my fries gram would make me and say "Keep Your eyes on your fries" :) i can't wait to see you again someday. and hear your awesome stories and hug and kiss you. You were my biggest fan in basketball...i hope you enjoyed watching me play cause this season was for you. "Just keep doing what you're doing" I still have voicemails you left me too and the one just says "Are you crazy?" and then you hung up. You have no idea how happy that message makes me feel. I miss you so much pappy, watch over me and protect me. I love you.

Danny,

I am so sorry to hear of your father's passing. He will always be in my memory passing the ball with you at the Holmes School playground. But he passed more than a football to you during all those evenings...he passed on his spirit. You and the family can rest assured that many others also caught that spirit from him. Whether at Mazaroski or Frazier Fields all of us were enriched by your father's dedication and generosity. May your family find comfort in the memory of a life well lived and my God bless you all.

Our sincere sympathy to the entire Marino family from the entire Fagnelli family from Oakland. From the early times when our grandmothers used to make pizzells together on Frazier St. to the times when your father would watch over all the kids during football games at Frazier field, he watched over all of us as if we were his own. I will never forget traveling to the away football games with St Regis and your dad and I used to sit next to each other on the school bus and he would always ask me "how can you girls tell who's pom-pom's belong to who." Such a caring man who will be missed. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dan and Claire,

Father's Day has always been special to me. A few years back our families spent it together at my Aunt Babe's house in Overbrook. The fathers were there: Dan Senior and Charlie. While the entire day was memorable I particuarly enjoyed my time with Dan Sr. I found him down to earth and a joy to talk to. He was the definition of what a "Dad" should be. I only wish I had more opportunities to talk to him.

Dear Ronnie,

I feel it's almost an intrusion to write at a time like this. But I must tell you how saddened I am by the loss of your husband. It was a privilege to have met you both at the home of my brother and sister in law, Dan and Linda Chiodo. I know what a good friend your Dan was to my brother as he was to others, I am sure. His loss will be felt by many for a long time to come.

Tony and I hope that time will quickly soften the blow, and leave you only cherished memories.

Warmest regards,

Michael

December 12, 2008

It's not important who I am but I have a brief story about Mr. Marino. I played football for St. Pius and when we played St. Regis, this other coach came up to me before the game and knew all about my previous games. That never happened to me. Then he pats me on the head, and I asked our coach who he was, and he said, "Mr. Marino." That stuck with me, and then a few years back, when my dad died, I found an old program from one of my grade school games. It was the St. Regis one and it brought back that memory again. To the Mariono family you have my prayers.
