David Wolfberg Obituary

WOLFBERG, DAVID, passed away on Tuesday, August 18th, 2015 in Miami, Florida at the age of 68. David is pre-deceased by his parents Helen and Abraham Wolfberg. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Shelley Wolfberg, his sons and daughter-in-laws, Adam and Kimberly Wolfberg and Darren and Michele Wolfberg. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Ryan, Kate, Eve and Taylor Wolfberg, his sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Richard Rosenberg, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve and Kay Rodnon and the many other friends and family members whose hearts he touched. David was born on April 11th 1947 in Brooklyn, New York. He moved with his family to Hewlett, New York in 1959. He attended The Ohio State University where graduated in 1969 with a degree in Architecture. From an early age, David's creative mind and abilities put him on a path to be a nationally recognized architect. He apprenticed with Kevin Roche and John Dinkeloo at Saarinen's office in Connecticut from 1969 to 1971. In 1976, he set off to cofound what is now Wolfberg Alvarez and Partners, where he remained Managing Partner until his retirement. He is a past President of the American Institute of Architects. Over these 35 years, David and his firm received numerous awards for their excellence in design in projects across the country. These buildings live on as a testament to his creative mind and the success he achieved in his field. David is also a past President of the John T. McDonald Foundation. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. David always put his family and friends and their needs first, attending every event for his children and providing them every opportunity to experience and succeed in life. He is remembered as a husband who was a true partner and friend, a man who believed his wife, Shelley, was his true soulmate. The family would like to thank the Miami Jewish Health Systems for their loving care and all those who helped David during his illness. The family requests that any donations be made in David's memory to The Parkinson's Disease Foundation (www.pdf.org). Services and entombment were held Friday. Arrangements by Levitt Weinstein (305)932-2700.

Dear Shelley,

I met David in 1975 as a lighting representative and visited your home to provide track lighting and we became friends.

When David formed his own firm he favored me with many of his lighting projects and was responsible for my own initial success.

Although life took us in different directions I will never forget his friendship and kindness.

I only recently learned of his passing as I was at the time recovering from major surgery.

I understand in a very personal way his struggle with PD as I myself am fighting the battle. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Most sincerely,

Howard Cohen

Dear Shelley and family:
I was very saddened to hear the news of David's passing from our high school class president Carol Harrison. David and I were best of friends for a few years growing up in North Woodmere and attending Hewlett High. He was one of only 2 friends I had come up and light a candle at my bar mitzvah and as this picture reminded me, he always had the best smile. Although we didn't stay in touch after high school, it was good to see how successful he was in business and as a husband and father. Sending my warmest wishes and
thoughts at this difficult time
Dennis

Shelly,
So sorry to hear about David. David was a wonderful architect and a great boss. He gave me my first job in 1973 at Connell, just from my resume ... Without an interview. Later I worked for him at Wolfberg Alvarez from 1980-1982. I learned a lot of valuable marketing lessons from him. Ron Singh Gupta [email protected]

Shelley and family: So sorry to hear this news. David shone out like a star -- when I needed a job he helped me escape from a very oppressive employer and thanks to him (and you) I quickly rebounded, lost a huge amount of weight and got my first manicure, LOL! I know these things may sound silly but you both were a very positive influence in my life and I'll never forget that and I want you to know how much I treasure my relationship with David all those years ago (and I'll NEVER wear a brown suit again). He really made a difference. Much love, Tony

Shelly,

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this very difficult time.

I recall meeting David in 1969, when he worked with Connell Associates, in Miami on NW 27th Avenue. Being two "New York kids", David and I were "sympatico designer-types" and collaborators on various projects that Connell was executing for my employer. That initial professional relationship lasted for more than 30 years, as I had the pleasure of providing landscape architectural services to David's Firm on a number of public and private projects. On such occasions, I always found David a willing listener, a respectful professional colleague, and a kind, caring, and thoughtful man always willing to consider the ideas and suggestions of others. The quality of his works of architecture speak volumes of his pursuit of the effective, efficient, and creative wedding of superior design with functional excellence.

My sincere condolences go out to Shelley and the Wolfberg family. David and his firm were wonderful collaborators as we began to envision a new Museum of Science for the community in the late 1990s, and I will treasure the many hours I spent with him during this process.
