Coral Gables, Florida - Francisco Civantos MD passed into eternal life on May 3, 2022. We are grateful for the 86 years that we were blessed to have him with us. He was the loving spouse of Elsa G. Civantos, his wife of 63 years, whom he adored, and who cared for him devotedly throughout is prolonged health battle.
Dr. Civantos attended Colegio Maristas de La Habana, University of Havana Medical School, and Tulane Medical School in New Orleans where he graduated at the top of his class in 1961. He completed Pathology residency at Massachusetts General /Harvard University. He subsequently served two voluntary years in the US Airforce, from 1965 to 1967 and then moved to South Florida, initially taking private practice positions until finding his niche at University of Miami Department of Pathology where he practiced for 2 decades. Dr Civantos' ultimately specialized in Urologic pathology, where he became a well-published renowned expert. A strong advocate for education, Dr. Civantos taught multiple generations of students and residents.
Dr. Civantos was an avid long-distance bicycle rider and regular participant in the Paris-Brest-Paris bicycle race. He loved discussing the pursuits of his 6 children, and was known for his edgy sense of humor and friendly teasing. He leaves his wife Elsa, his 6 adult children, Francisco Jr., Joseph, Marlene, Gloria, John, and Christina, his sons-in-law Manuel DeZarraga, Sameet Kumar, and Vladimir Piterbarg, and his daughters-in-law JoAnne Luke Civantos and Lilliam Carreño Civantos, as well as his 20 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. Francisco Civantos was loved by his colleagues and family and will be greatly missed.
Memorial service will take Sunday, May 8, 2022, at Caballero Rivero Kendall, 7355 SW 117 Avenue, 7pm-10pm. Catholic Mass service on Monday, May 9, 2022, at 10am, Church of the Epiphany. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cure Alzheimer's Fundhttps://curealz.org/
