FRANCISCO OLAZABAL Obituary

OLAZABAL, FRANCISCO J. (PANCHO), died peacefully on January 27, 2010 after a relentless two-year battle with cancer. He is survived by his devoted wife Betsy, his daughter Mary Liz (Ivan Harris), his son David (Ann), his beautiful grandchildren Charlie, Lily, Christian, and Nicholas, his mother Rosario Olazábal of New York City, his sister Rosario (Manuel Delgado) of Larchmont, New York, and his nephews and nieces. Pancho was born in Havana, Cuba on August 28, 1941, where he attended LaSalle. He came to the U.S. in 1960, received his undergraduate degree from Villanova University in 1963, and earned an MBA from Columbia University in 1964. In 1977, he became the first Cuban-born partner at the historic accounting firm of Price Waterhouse in New York City. He left an indelible mark on the firm, his partners and colleagues, and especially on the young people he taught and mentored there. Pancho had an energy and intensity that were absolutely unique. When he retired in 1999, he pursued his passion of photography with the same determination he had for everything he did. He called his award-winning photographs of obscure yet striking cityscapes Urbanography, and his works were shown publicly on numerous occasions. We wish he had had more time for his art and for many other things. A funeral mass will be held at St. Augustine Catholic Church on Friday, January 29 at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to UM Sylvester Cancer Center (Benedetto Research Fund), 1475 NW 12 Ave., Suite 3310, Miami 33136, or (305) 243-9088. View this Guest Book at www. I am sorry to hear about the loss of Pancho. I had the pleasure of working with him at Price Waterhouse in the 80s and saw him frequently enjoying his family at Riviera Country Club. He was a wonderful man.

I worked with Pancho at Price Waterhouse. He had a great sense of humor and a strong work ethic. Everyone felt comfortable around him. Although he was a partner, he was one of the gang. My deepest sympathies to his family and his many friends. May the Lord give you comfort at this time. Peggy Bermudez (Margate, FL)

Dear David, Mary and Betsy,

I was so sorry to hear of "Panchos" passing. I remember a lot of good times with him on the ball field as a kid. A good spirit, a good man. And a cool car which as an 8 year old made quite an impression. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Be well.
Much love,
Jason Dietz

My condolences to the Olazabal family. I had the pleasure of working with Pancho in my first job out of college while employed at PriceWaterhouse. I found him to be a respectful and professional man. I understand he took up art in his retirement and was enjoying it. I think he left a mark on those who had the opportunity to meet and work with him. All I can say is that he has moved on to a better place now. May he rest in Peace and may his family find the strength to cope with the loss

I was a friend of Pancho when I was a young girl in Ciego de Avila, Cuba. Our parents were long time friends. Even though he was a bit older than me, we shared fun times at Club de Cazadores. I have always remembered him very fondly and I am sad that his life ended so early. May he rest in peace. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Dear Olazabal Family,

Greg and I are so sorry about Pancho (or Mr. Olazabal as I always called him). He always made me laugh during visits to your home and his humor and intelligence were unique. He was lucky to have such a loving wife, children and grandkids.

Pancho was a mainstay in the digital lab at UM. His relentless pursuit of excellence and understanding was an inspiration to the younger students in the photography classes. He will be missed.

My condolences to the family of "Tabaco" as he was known to many of us since childhood in Cuba.
He would be very proud of the comments/remarks made by both of his children at today's services.
I can relate very much to the pride he felt in his achievements at Price Waterhouse as I spent 18 years with one of his competitors and knew how proud he was of the Firm and his role there. I also saw a number of his alumni at today's services which he would be very pleased with.
I was not aware that he was so ill although I had not seen him at Church in the last three months. It is a shame that his life ended so early but his suffering has ended. May he rest in Peace!!

One of the special things that happened to me was to become neighbors with the Olazabal's. Pancho was a wonderful Dad, Granddad and friend. I am only sorry that I did not know him better. He enriched many people's lives and will be missed by many.
