Jack Meyer Obituary

MEYER, JACK LEE., 86, was born in Florida, youngest of seven children, whose parents, Floy and James Meyer, settled in Miami in 1912. He graduated from Miami Senior High School in 1943. Under an Army Engineering program, he attended North Carolina State. He received his commission at Ft. Benning, Ga. serving in the US Army Infantry Corp as a 2nd Lt. in World War II in the pacific. He then graduated from the University of Florida with a civil engineering degree, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He was recalled in the Korean War and served as a 1st Lt. in the Engineer Corp. on Okinawa. Jack was part of the Greatest Generation. In 1962, as a partner in a consulting engineering firm in Miami, he engineered the unique structural design for the Miami Marine Stadium where all of the calculations and decisions made to engineer this complex structure were "on the money". There were no computers then. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has put the Marine Stadium on their 11 most endangered list. He joined Burger King Corporation in Miami and became the Director for the Engineering- Architect Department. At Plymouth Congregational Church in Coconut Grove, he served on the Board of Trustees. He was a member and commodore of the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club in Miami. He enjoyed racing and sailing on Biscayne Bay and in the Bahamas, and he enjoyed fly-fishing in North Carolina where he and his wife had a summer home. He was an avid reader of especially history and war. Becoming a pilot was one of the joys of his life, having built modoel airplanes and winning state contests in his young life. Jack is survived by his wife Nina of 63 years, his daugther Gwenn Oldham, (Richard), his son Steve (Jeanette), grandchildren Darby Arch (Mike), Chip Oldham (Ginny), Scott Meyer (Amy), Shannon Ludlam (Matt) Susanna Bumpus (Brian), great-grandchildren, James, Tyler, Sophie, Oliver, Lily. It was a mutual love affair with his family and total respect from his friends and co-workers. Jack was a man of strict integrity. A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 18, at 3 o'clock at Plymouth Congregational Church in Coconut Grove, followed by a reception at the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the college of Engineering, 300 Weil Hall, P.O. Box 11650, Gainesville, FL 32611.

My uncle, Jack Meyer, taught me to stow my lines and keep them tight - but ready to use at a moments notice. As in sailing, Jack lived his life that way. You always knew he was prepared and ready for what may come. I will miss this wonderful, kind and thoughtful man. All my love to you Aunt Nina, Gwen and Steve and the whole family.

I always remember Jack for his calm demeanor, patience and his ability to teach others. Early on....... when I started my BK career, Jack thought me to be flexible. He told me once........."Pete sometimes you need to give up a little to get you want" This was so true........

My sincere condolences to the whole Meyer family.

My wife Nina and I got to know Jack and Nina through our work on the Miami Marine Stadium. Of course if it was not for Jack's brilliant work-which is now being recognized worldwide-we would not be in a position to save the Marine Stadium.

But more than that, my Nina and I really had a chance to appreciate what a fine and honorable person Jack was. The four of us have spent some great time together and we'll always remember Jack.

Jack taught me many things during the 10-years that we worked together. He taught me patience and to focus on those things you hold most dear, your family, your integrity and the quality of your work. He was a wonderful person and I will always be grateful to have known him. My best wishes to Nina and the family.
