James Cox Obituary

James Cox

July 19, 1954 - September 24, 2023

Miami, Florida - James Warren Cox, age 69, a lifelong resident of Miami-Dade County, passed away unexpectedly on September 24, 2023, at Baptist Health Hospital of Kendall, FL. Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Janette Manon Cox, as well as his children: Jennifer (Michael) O'Hara, Jonelle (Jeffry) Lindsay, and Juliann (Scott) Blanford. He also leaves behind a legacy through his grandchildren: Kaylee, Aubree, Logan, Michael, John, Elliott, and Joseph. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Virginia Cox, and his sister, Jane VanFossen.

Jim enrolled in Biscayne College (now known as St. Thomas University) in 1977 where he proudly graduated in 1981 as part of the Pioneer Class of the Sports Administrative Program. He went on to achieve remarkable success in the field of sports administration, serving as the Director of Athletics at Miami Dade Community College for 14 years. In January 2021, he retired from his full-time role at Barry University after a gratifying 44-year career in Sports Administration.

Jim was the Crew Chief for the Miami Heat and Miami Dolphins for 40+ years, overseeing game statistics. He also handled game statistics at UM, Barry University, and FIU, and worked on stats for 6 Super Bowls at the Hard Rock Stadium since 1991.

Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, neighbor, and friend. He cherished family outings to Michigan, Connecticut, Zoo Miami, sporting events, the local gardens, and beaches.

In loving memory of James Warren Cox, may his legacy of p¬assion for sports and devotion to family continue to inspire us all.

Jim was the AD when I was there on Jerry Isom’s Track team in the late 80’s. Jim is a great guy always friendly and always smiling. He will be missed by all. He made more of an impact on more people in one year than the average person does in a lifetime. Rest in peace Jim.

I remember Jim from the 1990´s when he ran the adult volleyball leagues at MDCC. He was such a pleasant guy to be around. I always looked for him on TV during the Heat games.
