JEFFREY KNAPP Obituary

KNAPP, JEFFREY. After 9 years of a most courageous battle with cancer, Jeffrey Ira Knapp passed away on Wednesday, February 17, in his home, with his family at his bedside. Jeffrey was born on March 2, 1949, in Elizabeth, NJ, the son of the late Sam and Roz Knapp. He attended Emerson College, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and University of Miami, where, as a Samuel Beckett scholar, he received his Masters Degree in Literature and was a recent graduate of the Florence Melton Center for Jewish Education. Jeffrey lived on Miami Beach for thirty-five years and was a fixture in the city's art and literary communities. He was an avid art collector specializing in Haitian and Outsider folk art. He co- created many art installations and his poetry was brought to life through his wife, Dina's, illustrations. Jeffrey was a connoisseur of life and celebrated travel, music, fashion, food, art and literature. He spoke fluent Hebrew, French, Arabic, and Creole, wrote and translated poetry, including the poetry of the estimable Haitian poet Felix Morriseau-Leroy. He founded Florida's Poetry in the Schools program, and was one of three itinerant "Bicycle Poets" who brought poetry to students throughout the State. He served on the Board of Tigertail Productions. He also founded and edited Dial-a-Poem. His Dada-Surrealist poems appeared in many prestigious literary journals including Ploughshares and the Boston Review of the Arts. Jeffrey held a position at Florida International University since1989, first as a composition instructor in the English Department. He became Director of the First-Year Interest Groups Program, and in 2002 was named Director of the Academy for the Art of Teaching. He was a Faculty Senator, the Chair of the University Core Curriculum Oversight Committee, co-chair of the Teaching and Learning with Technology Roundtable, a member of the Access and Equity Committee and the Academic Learning Compacts Committee, and a coordinator for the Title V project. Jeffrey presented pedagogical papers at a number of leading international and national conferences on learning communities and on teaching and learning with technology. In 2009 Jeffrey was very honored to be the recipient of the President's Access & Equity Award at FIU, presented to a full- time employee who has consistently gone above and beyond his or her job responsibilities to promote and ensure diversity and inclusiveness. Jeffrey also was a Hebrew School teacher, member of the Board of Education and the Board of Trustees at Temple Beth Shalom and shared the love of his heritage with many students. His wife, the artist Dina Knapp, his daughters Ariel Knapp of Los Angeles, Astra Schwartz Dorf of New York, a grandchild, Athena Dorf, and his two loving poodles, Paris and Colette, survive him. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society or the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. Services will be held at Temple Beth Shalom, 4144 Chase Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33140, Friday, February 19th at 11 a.m., burial to follow at Mount Nebo Kendall Memorial Chapels. Jeffrey was a colleague and friend. I am very sad to hear of his passing. His time with us was dedicated to make FIU a better place for "all" students.

May GOD bless his family and I too send peace and love to them.

Jeffrey was sunshine -- playful and impish (Jeffrey, is that a poodle in your bag!). He was also a brilliant educator and interdisciplinarian without peer. The sun is shining and beings who think inside boxes are quaking wherever he is now. I am honored to have known him and will miss him.

I met Jeffrey years ago through my second wife and sadly when our marriage dissolved, my relationship with the Knapp family dissipated, because there were many miles between us. I will miss his smile, intellect and creativity, but it will always be there in the life
that was Jeffrey Knapp as will his pride in Dina and the children. To you, I say, remember the good times, the pain of loss will dissapear as time is the great healer and I speak having lived through it.

I have so many memories of Jeffrey, I don't know where to start. We met 34 years ago when I was a teenager. Jeffery was an extraordinary man, with so much passion for so many things; literary, culinary, fashion, familial...I can still taste his amazing five-spice Chinese chicken. I hope that the good memories give strength to dear Dina, Astra and Ariel.

Jeffrey was my creative writing professor at FIU in the nineties. He left an indelible impression on me with his unorthodox but effective approach to teaching. He also sparked in me a passion for my own written expression. I had the good fortune to see him several times over the years that followed. His work in the community especially as it related to issues of diversity was extraordinary and his legacy will live on forever.

I'll miss Jeffrey. I'll miss his smile and the playful glint in his eye. I'll miss our discussions and our common appreciation of artistic endeavor. "Come you have to see this artist's work." I'm left with such fond memories of times with friends. I hear the sound of clinking glasses of champagne and wine. I'll miss the aromas and tastes of lovingly crafted meals together, many that he prepared. OMG, I'll miss his smoked hickory duck that he knew I loved so much. "I made it special for you, where are you?" I'll miss his homemade brandy. Still, I know that I didn't really know him completely, after all, we had only met in the last few years. I didn't know exactly what he taught or actually did at FIU. Now as I hear others talk about him, and how they loved him, were mentored by him, were inspired by him, whole new chapters of his life open up. We were friends and I was fortunate to share many pleasurable times together, but, to name just one, I never knew of Jeffrey's poetic proclivity. I am sadder in the wake of his passing that there was more that we didn't have the joy of sharing. I'll miss those lost opportunities. I'll console myself that I knew him at all and shared what we did. I'll miss Jeffrey.
