Joella Good Obituary

GOOD, JOELLA C., died August 24, 2004 of sudden cardiac arrest in Miami, Florida. She was born on August 19, 1922 in Walhalla, S.C. to William Rhett and Sarah Wallace Craig and is survived by her daughters: Joella Good Newberry (Roger) of Rollinsville, CO and Margaret Good-Earnest (Big Dee) of West Palm Beach, FL; three grandchildren: Sam, Laura and Elliot, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, step children, and friends. After her husband Richard C. Good died in 1977, she remarried in 1983, to a childhood friend from Walhalla, Jack Dendy, who died in 1992. Beloved educator, social activist, and friend. Ms. Good will be remembered as a very special lady full of Christian spunk and vigor throughout her incredible life of love and service to children and public schools. Her career as a classroom teacher in Palm Beach and Dade Counties began at Palm Beach Public in 1956; she was an assistant professor at FAU where she supervised education majors during their internships in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County schools before becoming the principal of Coconut Elementary School from 1973-84. By her kind but firm resolve and directive counseling, she settled conflicts without violence in keeping with her exemplary slogan, prominently displayed on her desk," This school is for children." She was the recipient of many awards and honors, including the naming of an elementary school in her honor , the Joella C. Good Elementary School in Miami Lakes, dedicated on November 28, 1990. She treasured the children and was honored to receive their 92 cards, letters and drawings on her recent birthday. She also was named F.I. U. educator of the year and was the recipient of the Golden Coconut Award for service to the community of Coconut Grove. She was active in PEO, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Riviera Presbyterian Church, in South Miami and other civic and professional organizations. Services in celebration of her life and resurrection will be held 2 PM Sunday Aug. 29th officiated by Dr. Laura Kraus at the Riviera Presbyterian Church, 5275 Sunset Drive. Joella Good was my professor at Florida Atlantic University and my supervisor when I interned in 1969. Her ability to teach, motivate, and support her students was incredible.

She was my mentor and I owe most of my teaching success during my 34 years in the Miami-Dade Public Schools to her. Through the years, she always maintained her interest in my career and she was thrilled when I was named the Dade County Teacher of the Year only 10 years after my graduation.

Knowing Mrs. Good was a joy. She was a model of gentleness and love. I thank the Lord for allowing me the opportunity to be schooled by her in education and in life. She will be missed, but I know that even know the Lord is welcoming her with open arms.

Dear Joe & Peggy,

Your mother changed so many lives for the better...She was ahead of her time and a guiding light for others to follow in her foot steps.

You and your families have always been a blessing for her and brought great joy to her life.

She may no longer stand at our side, but there is no dought that she will always be with us in spirit.

Our love and prayers go with you,

I have wonderful memories of "Mrs. Good". She was a wonderful mom, friend and mentor to me as I spent many happy times at her home with my best friend Peggy and her sister Jo. She will be sorely missed. Please keep in touch, Jo and Peggy. Love, Amy (Anderson-Mcclure)
