JOHN HARLLEE Obituary
HARLLEE, JOHN, JR. (JACK), passed away on July 28. 2012 at his home on Card Sound Road in Key Largo, Florida. Jack was born in Tampa, Florida on October 26, 1928, to J. Wiiliam and Gladys Harllee. The family moved to Miami in 1929 and made their home in Northeast Miami for the remainder of their lives. Jack was a graduate of Edison High School and then earned the degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Florida. While a student he was an active member of Gainesville First Baptist Church. a leader in the Baptist Student Union and a manager of University Intramural Sports. Jack is survived by his wife, Dr. Nora Harllee of 62 years; sons Attorney Mark V. Harllee of Ft. Pierce and Dr. John B. Harllee and wife, Cheryl, of Stuart; daughter Dorrie and husband, Ed of Medfield, MA. Beloved grandchildren include Aaron and Emmajane Kanter, Christine and Richard Dowling, children of Chris and deceased daughter, Linda Harllee Dowling. Other family members are Joyce Harllee, widow of Jack's brother, Lt. Col. Chaplain Robert C. Harllee; their children Robert Harllee of Charlottesville, VA and Drs. Lynn and Charlie Bichajian of Rochester, MA and their children, Laura and Amy. Although Jack served his church and community in many capacities, he was first a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He tried to be apart of all their activities and was so proud of their accomplishments. While statewide President of the Florida Engineering Society he was honored as "Engineer of the Year" and granted Lifetime Membership. As quoted in the Society's resume, "There are two things about Jack Harllee, P.E., that make him a revered leader and friend: he is a consummate team player and he lives his life with true conviction." After Jack earned his degree in Civil Engineering, he worked for a short time with Florida's Department of Transportation. He then joined Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory in Jacksonville, Florida. Within two years, he was promoted to assistant district manager, transferred to Miami in 1953 as district manager and then became vice-president of the company. In that position for 37 years, he administered a staff that produced well over 35,000 projects. Three of those projects were the Miami and Ft. Lauderdale Seaports and Miami International Airport. In Monroe County he did the foundation work for the Ocean Reef Club and Card Sound Bridge. In the late 80's, in response to a change in company policies, he saw an additional chance for success with ATEC & Associates, Inc. where he remained for 7 years. Jack and Nora raised their four children in Northeast Miami where they continued to make their home. Jack was active in many community endeavors: he served as Deacon and Bible teacher and choir member in Miami Shores Baptist Church; President of the Miami Shores Kiwanis Club; Dade County School Board and the Florida Public School State Council; Advisory member to the State Legislature, representing the Eleventh Congressional District. He also served on The District Advisory Board for the Board of Public Instruction and on the University of Florida School Of Engineering Technology Advisory Committee. He served as President of the U.S. IODA Youth Sailing while a member of the Miami Yacht Club. As a youth, Jack became an Explorer Boy Scout and later became a leader of his sons' scout troop. Upon retirement, Jack and Nora sold their Bay Point home and bought a home in Key Largo, Jack continued to serve his Lord in the First Baptist Church of Key Largo, He served as an active deacon until his death. He served as a teacher, choir member and Director of the Jack Hill Child Care Center. Along. with their house, they bought a boat, fishing gear, and scuba-diving equipment. Their many years of retirement were spent fishing and diving with friends, children and grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at noon, Sunday, August 26, 2012, at the First Baptist Church of Key Largo, 99001 Overseas Highway. Those attending are invited to share lunch and visit with the family in the Church Fellowship Hall. The family will scatter his ashes in the Atlantic Ocean at their home on Card Sound Road. Anyone desiring to give donations is requested to consider the Jack Hill Child Care Center and/or Boy Seoul Troop 588 in care of First Baptist Church of Key Largo.
