John Lowell Obituary

John "Jack" Lowell Jr.

September 2, 1943 - September 28, 2024

Coral Gables, Florida - Jack Lowell, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, philanthropist, and trailblazer in the commercial real estate industry, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2024, surrounded by his loving family: his wife, Natasha, and his children Carolyn "Kat" Napolitano (Ted Napolitano), Loring Lowell, Lindsley Lowell, Lena Lowell Johnson (Eddie Johnson), and John Lowell. He cherished his special relationships with his grandchildren: Charlotte Napolitano (21), Zander Lowell Johnson (5), and Teddy Lowell Johnson (4). His dog, Myko, was also a loyal companion. Jack was so grateful to have his loved ones by his side. Jack knew his greatest legacy was his children, who carry forward his spirit and values.

Born in Westwood, Massachusetts, and raised in Nahant, as the eldest of five children of John Lowell and Eleanor Trumbull Lowell. Jack is survived by his siblings Charlotte and Jim, Molly and Rich, Bill and Angela and Ellie and his Trumbull and Lowell cousins with whom he shared a lifetime of love and laughter.

Jack was known for his love and loyalty to his closest friends who became his extended family traveling the world together with his zeal for history, parties, and costumes, and for any occasion when all three were combined. He also held court with wit, humor and political passions with friends and "Business Network" family, often at his favorite place on Biscayne Bay, Coral Reef Yacht Club.

Jack attributed much of his success in life to the remarkable educational legacy of his Lowell and Trumbull families. He attended Nobles and Greenough School and graduated from Harvard University where he formed lifelong relationships. While attending Harvard he was dedicated to the AD Club, the Crew Team (rowed in the Henley Royal Regatta), and ROTC.

Jack served in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1968 aboard the USS Muliphen stationed in Norfolk, with tours of duty throughout Europe and the Caribbean. After living in New York City, Boston, and St. Louis, Jack found his true home in Miami, where he dedicated over 50 years of his life personally and professionally.

Along with great Miami partners, Jack was a pioneering force in South Florida's commercial real estate landscape, with vision and leadership that shaped the local economy and commercial real estate industry. Prior to his role as Executive Vice President at Colliers, he held key positions at esteemed firms: Coldwell Banker Commercial, Tishman Speyer Properties, Summa Properties, Codina Bush Klein Realty, and Flagler Real Estate Services/a Codina Group.

Jack was deeply committed to civic engagement and charitable endeavors. He was the former Chair of the Beacon Council, the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, and the Coral Gables Community Foundation. Notably, his leadership of the Beacon Council during the Great Recession was pivotal, as he spearheaded initiatives that laid the groundwork for Miami-Dade's recovery and growth.

Jack's legacy of giving back extended to other organizations, including serving on Advisory Boards for 21st Century Schools Bond Advisory Committee, WPBT Channel 2, Teach for America, the United Way of Miami-Dade, The Salvation Army, Friends of Gables High, and Zoo Miami. He was an ardent supporter of Baptist Health South Florida, Florida International University (FIU), The Miami Foundation and Casa Familia, Inc. Jack was a dedicated parishioner, served as the Deacon of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, chaired the board of the church's day school and cherished the community at Plymouth Congregational Church.

Jack believed in the power of community and dedicated himself to making a lasting impact through hands-on involvement and instilled this belief in his family and in all those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, leadership, and dedication to his family and community. Jack will be deeply missed!

The Lowell family is forever grateful to Dr. David Feldman and Dr. Jennifer Temel of Massachusetts General Hospital for their compassionate care and support. Celebrations of Jack's life will be held in Miami (November 2024) and in both Nahant and Mattapoisett in 2025. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jack's memory to your preferred Miami charitable organization.
