Joseph Shulman Obituary

SHULMAN, JOSEPH, was born in New York City, son of Ida Brotofsky Shulman and Abraham Shulman in 1921. Joe graduated from NYU School of Finance in 1942 and after graduation married Florence Rothman. He served in the US Army in Guam during World War II. Joe was a grocer in the Bronx before the family moved to Miami Beach in 1955. He was encouraged to become a banker by his mentor and friend, Jacques Mossler. Joe spent 30 years working in Miami banks, starting at Central Bank and then serving as President of Pan American Bank and Chairman of the Board of National Bank of Florida. He served his community and helped establish the Hebrew Home for the Aged and worked as a fundraiser for Israel Bonds. Joe and Florence realized their dream by retiring to Tarpon Springs, experiencing the ownership of horses and cattle, and starting their own citrus grove. They travel extensively, Joe spent a great deal of time writing of his experiences, and they especially enjoyed the time spent with their family, which was the reason they returned to South Florida in 2002. Florence passed in 2006 and Joe was cared for by their loving friend and aide, Phynett Cummings. Joseph is survived by his brother, Jerry (Connie) Shulman of Dobbs Ferry, NY, his sister, Ethel Cohen of New Port Richey and their children, and by his 3 daughters, Rosanne (Michael) Lubin, Bobbie Green, Gail (Stuart) Corenblum, and grandchildren: Allison (Michael) Cooper, Tracey (Larry) Spiegelman, Audra (Robert) Mittleman, Kim (Andrew) Moed, Andrew (Jennifer) Green, Amy (Steven) Hurwitz and Lesley Lubin. Joe was fortunate enough to experience the Bat Mitzvah of his eldest great-granddaughter, Lindsay Spielgelman, and cherished all the "greats": Aaron Spielgelman, Sydney, Max & Chase Moed, Jack & Delaney Cooper, Ryan & Rachel Mittleman, Lexi & Morgan Green, and Hannah & Evan Hurwitz. Chapel services will be held at 12 PM today, January 2, 2009 at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapel, 5900 SW 77 Avenue, with interment to follow at Mt. Nebo Miami. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Israeli charity of your choice. To visit this Guest Book Online, go to www.MiamiHerald.com/obituaries.

Daddy, it´s 2023 and your Birthday! You are SO VERY MISSED and not a day goes by that we don´t mention you, Mommy, Grandma and Poppy! If there is a heaven, you are all there and know so many others who have also passed. I hope you are taking care of Michael and you are all surrounded by our doggies...I can´t believe that the `baby´ of your family, me, will soon be 75! You would all be so happy to know that I have been living in Charlotte since Michael passed, and it has been ten years! The kids and I bought a home on a few acres and Peter built a greenhouse for my orchids and seedlings and he has a real vegetable and flower farm! Lesley mothers me and still is my very best friend, the most caring and loving person! I´m included in every aspect of their lives, and you and mommy would be so happy at the trips we have taken. She is now a Sr VP with Bank of America in a very different banking world that you knew! Peter is the most amazing photographer, and so well loved by so many. I am so proud to have such wonderful children. I pray you can all see everyone from heaven. I speak to Gail and Bobbie and all the children and your Great Grandchildren are amazing achievers. We all can´t express the love and gratitude you instilled in us. We live in a very different country and world today and feel blessed for growing up in our time. Rosey

Dear Audra and Robert, Gale and Stuart, Allison and Michael, Amy and Steven:

We are so so sorry for your loss.
But Joe is "at peace" now and with Florence.
He lived a wonderful life and you were truly blesssed, as was he.

You are in the thoughts and prayers of so many who love you.

Allan joins me in expressing our deepest sympathy to Gail, Bobbie, Rosanne and the entire family. I have many wonderful personal memories of your father and your mother too. Your father taught me to drive a car (when he got sick of listening to me grinding the gears on my new stick shift Renault). He had lots of patience and never raised his voice to me.
