Juanita Stokes Obituary

STOKES, JUANITA HEMPERLEY, 86, of Miami Springs, passed away on April 19, 2007. Born in Atlanta in 1920, she moved to Miami in 1942 so that she could be a day closer via postal mail to the man who would become her husband, Walter J. Stokes, then stationed in San Juan in the Navy. They married a year later. Walter died in 1996. She is survived by her son Paul M. Stokes and her daughter-in-law Carol Macon Crocker Stokes, and by her daughter Julia Juanita Stokes Gay and her son-in- law Gregory G. Gay. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Juanita was a graduate of the Georgia State College for Women. She was active in the churches in which she had membership over the years, Central Baptist Church, Miami Springs Baptist Church, and finally the First Presbyterian Church of Miami Springs, and in the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was gifted with needle and thread, among many other ways, and was a member of the Embroiderers Guild of America and active in its local chapter. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, April 28, at the First Presbyterian Church of Miami Springs, 301 Westward Drive. Interment will be in Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the memorial fund of the First Presbyterian Church of Miami Springs or to the temple, church or other charity of the donor's choice. Juanita was a charming and friendly lady whose friendship I cherished so much at the Biscayne Chapter of the Embroiderers' Guild of America.
Thinking of her has always warmed my heart. I will always remember her lovely smile and kind words.

Julia, Paul and families,

We remember your family from our early years at Central Baptist Church. Through the years we had lost contact with you, except for Paul, who has been so gracious in helping Central Baptist Church at different times.

God’s blessings to each of you as you deal not only with with the loss you feel but also the joy that comes when God calls one of His own home. May this thought from a recent sermon at Central by our pastor, Matt Sparks, bring you comfort: "Heaven is being in God's presence." It doesn't get any better than that!
