Mark Berg Obituary

Mark was born to Larry and Pauline Berg of Brooklyn, New York on March 05, 1948. Mark passed, after a long battle with both bladder and lung cancer. Mark's father, Larry, volunteered for service the day after Pearl Harbor and served with distinction as a member of the 1st Ranger Battalion of the United States Army in W.W.II, having participated in and wounded during the Normandy invasion of June 6, 1944 and fought his way to Bavaria. Larry was discharged at war's end, after serving as a drill instructor at Fort Dix, N.J. Mark's mother Pauline worked in the War Department's Rockefeller Center office during W.W.II. After discharge Larry worked for the Trump Organization until his retirement, and Pauline worked for the Kings County (Brooklyn) District Attorney's Office from 1963 until retirement. Larry and Pauline moved to Florida in 1977. Mark attended P.S. 175 (Brownsville) Brooklyn, N.Y. John Wilson Jr. High (Canarsie) Brooklyn, New York and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School (East New York) Brooklyn, New York in 1965. Mark attended, but did not graduate from Long Island University (Zeckendorf Campus). Mark was active in the Brooklyn democratic party, and was a protégé of Meade Esposito (the Late democratic party leader of Brooklyn) and served as an assistant to Congressman Frank J. Brasco. Mark began his career at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center. Mark moved to Miami, Florida in 1976 to take the position as the first Collection Coordinator of the Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute/University of Miami Department of Ophthalmology. In 1981, Mark was recruited by South Miami Hospital to be their collections manager. During Mark's tenure at South Miami Hospital he assisted in developing and managing the first insurance collection department in Florida and also instituted the first four day work week (in Florida) for the insurance collectors under the tutelage of Patrick F. Mulligan, Office Manager. During Mark's stint as collection manager, collections out-paced revenue every year. After South Miami Hospital, Mark held the position of Office Manager at Parkway Regional Medical Center and later Coral Reef Hospital. Mark graduated the University of Miami in 1981. Mark retired in 2012. Mark was the first President of Devonaire Villas Association (Kendall) and served four successive terms, and later was elected to the position of President of the Devonaire Master Association. Mark was a football and baseball coach for the Pop Warner/West Kendall Optimist Club Wildcats (from 1983 to 1989). Mark asked that donations be made to the Wounded Warriors Project or the American Cancer Society.

I met Mark while he was working at Parkway Hospital. He was the Business Office Managers and I managed the Miami branch office of Creditors Mercantile, a 3rd party accounts receivable firm specializing in medical debt collections. He started out as a client and soon became close friends. When he left Parkway Hospital he came to work for me for a short time while he sought another position in a hospital business office. One of my fondest memories of Mark is of a 4th of July trip he and I made in 1985. We were sitting around my apartment in Hallandale, bored, trying to think of something to do. On a whim I suggested we drive up to Columbus, Ga and visit my parents. We hit the road late afternoon for the 9 hour or so drive. In central Florida I was able to pick up a radio station telecasting the Atlanta Braves game against the New York Mets. He was an avid Mets fan and I was loyal Braves fan. That game lasted 19 innings with the Mets prevailing. We started listening to the game in central Florida during our drive and actually watched the end of the game on TV at my parent's home in Columbus. In 1991 I left South Florida and relocated to Jacksonville, FL and we eventually lost contact with each other. Today is April 23, 2025 and on a whim, and without much hope of being successful because he has such a common name, I thought I would Google him to see if I could locate him. Finding his obituary brought me much sorrow. And much regret for not doing this many years ago so that we could have spent more time together. Mark was a good man, a good friend, and I will mourn for him. Farewell my Brother and may you rest in eternal peace.

Mark and lovely family were our next door neighbors in the Devaire Community in Miami in the early '08s. A good neighbor and friend there was none better than Mark. His generosity in providing his time and assistance in helping me build a TV / Library console was so appreciated. Our family get utogethers on the weekends were great fun. As history students at the University of Miami we often had great discussions of the courses we were taking. Hearing of Mark's passing saddened me but remembered his generosity, good humor and his love of family and community is how I will remember him. My sincere condolences to his family and all those cared and loved Mr. Berg
