Martin Segal Obituary

Martin Segal
July 2, 1939 - December 30, 2022
Miami, Florida - Martin E. Segal, a lifelong Miami resident, attorney, author, charitable volunteer and activist, and University of Miami professor, passed away peacefully at South Miami Hospital on December 30, 2022, surrounded by his family, following a brief illness.
Marty was a graduate of Miami Beach High School (1957), the University of Florida (1961), and the University of Miami Law School (1964). He joined the law firm of Patton & Kanner following his graduation from law school, and served as its Managing Partner until 1987. His experience spanned all aspects of civil litigation and transactional business practice, covering contracts, corporate, commercial, probate, real estate, and entrepreneurship practice. During his time with the firm, he was involved in some of the area's most significant real estate projects, including the development of Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo and the redevelopment of South Beach.
From 1991 until his death, Marty served as a professor and lecturer at the University of Miami Herbert Business School, where he specialized in business law. He authored textbooks on the subject as well as numerous law and business journal articles, and was recognized on multiple occasions for his teaching excellence. Marty also was the author of several personal growth books, and appeared in the Business Monday section of the Miami Herald from 2003 through 2012 as "Ask Doctor Law". Marty also actively volunteered his time in support of numerous local causes, including Camillus House and Jackson Memorial Hospital, and his charitable activities included the endowment of local scholarships related to his work at the University of Miami.
Marty is survived by his cherished partner Judy Manson, his two children (Ruth Segal-Goldman and Barry Segal), three grandchildren (Davey Segal, and Matthew and Daniel Goldman), his sister (Skyward Barbara Bernstein) and brother (Howard Segal), cousins (Harriet Sparozic and Karen Yuska), his nephew (Joshua Bernstein), and other family and dear friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Marty's life will be held at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels at Mt Nebo (Kendall), 5900 SW 77 Avenue, Miami 33143, on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, Marty's family requests that donations in his memory be sent to the University of Miami – Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism & Related Disabilities (UM-NSU CARD) – www.card.miami.edu.

I worked with Marty when he was of counsel at Walton Lantaff. No matter the circumstances, Marty kept a cool and balanced head. His ethical standards were second to none. I haven't spoken to Marty in years, but I miss him and the world is a poorer place for his loss.

I am a career litigator in Miami. I earned a BBA, MBA, and JD at the University of Miami (from 1995-2002). Professor Segal taught my first law course in my first year of college. I remember the experience well. His texts, lectures, and exams were my first exposure to concepts that serve as the foundation of my career. It was an honor to learn from him. At this time of loss (and celebration of a life well lived), my thoughts and prayers are with his family and close friends.

Professor Segal is one of the few professors who made a lasting impact during my time in undergrad at UM. He always instructed with passion and energy and I looked forward to hearing his stories in class every week. In my professional career, I use what I´ve learned in his class on a daily basis and will continue to keep him in my memory as one of his textbooks has a permanent home in my office.

I had the privilege of taking classes with Professor Segal at UM. He was an amazing instructor in the classroom and he always told the students we could reach him any time after graduating. He really wanted to help everyone as much as possible. In fact he set a lot of the direction I've taken in my life through those courses with him, helping me to navigate my entrepreneurial path, and I still think back to those classes 20 years later. I'll always appreciate his outstanding influence, he was a great man.

I am very thankful to have taken his class back in 1995 during my MBA program at UM. He was best the professor I had in all my time in college and graduate school. I reflect on what I learned from him on a regular basis. We will certainly be missed.
