Monte Bernstein Obituary

BERNSTEIN, MONTE WOLF, Monte Wolf Bernstein, 64, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday April 9, 2015 at his winter home in Keystone Heights, Florida, near Gainesville. He also lived in Hadley, NY in the summer. Monte was the son of Joseph and Harriet Bernstein of North Miami. He graduated from Great Neck North Senior High School in 1968, The University of Wisconsin in 1972 and The University of Miami Medical School in 1976. Before he retired, Dr. Bernstein was an Anesthesiologist at Hollywood Medical Center and Memorial Regional Hospital and was a partner at Anesthesia Associates, all in Hollywood, Florida. Monte is survived by his sister Sandy (Gary) Kornheiser, his ex-wife and lifelong friend Kathi Silverman, and his many cherished friends. Monte was best known for his many varied interests, charisma and skills including sailing, but primarily as a reliable, responsible, true-blue and devoted friend. Monte will be greatly missed by all who ever knew him.

Monte exemplified what a friend should be. Truly missing the exchange of ideas on sailboat repairs. We successfully sailed with him on Sea Wolf from Hollywood to Maine and back.

Hard to believe it's been 5 years since this wonderful person passed. My family and I think about him and the truely nice person he was. This collection of thoughts on Legacy shows the impact this man had on us all.

I still miss him and think of our good times frequently!

April 8, 2019

Every time I drive by his house I think of him. This time of year he was getting excited about going up to his summer place in New York. Just before he passed he was talking about building a new cabin and said he couldn't find a builder for two years and said at his age he couldn't wait that long. Sadly his dream never came to fruition. A great man and true friend. We will never forget you.

Monte knew my family since he was young, and felt like a relative to me.Whenever we met he spoke about all of his current projects that he had planned for the summer months at his cabin. Monte was an exceptional man. It amazed me how much knowledge he had on fixing anything. While visiting both my mother and sister Eileen,he loved fixing things for them. It was a joy to know him. He is already greatly missed.

Ashley Rubin

May 13, 2015

The "Monte List" was a much used saying within our family. Every time something needed to be fixed, we would put it on the "Monte List" for him to repair on his next visit. Though very nice to have someone capable of repairing any and everything, the very best part of having a "Monte List" was the assurance that Monte would be by in the summer, and that we would have a wonderful time with him. Monte really was like part of the family, and I always enjoyed chatting with him about this and that, or joking about what the future held. Monte was always so supportive of my acting career, and would often come and see my productions, bringing me my favorite candies as a congratulatory gift. I always loved having him announced in the pre-show speeches. They would say to the audience, "Ashley Rubin would like to welcome her Mother's High school boyfriend"! But, in all honestly, we all knew he was more than that. Monte was family, and will be greatly missed.

As Eileen's sister, I've known Monte throughout most of my life. Always like an old shoe, there was that level of comfort and candid, easy talk between us, even if some years went by without contact.
When I got married my parents donated their Rhodes 19 to us. My then husband loved boats, but I had no idea how to sail. Like a great younger brother, It only took one phone call for Monte to agree to come back to NY for the summer to teach me. He was so terrific that by the time his lessons came to an end, I was capable of sailing alone from Great Neck Estates to the Throg's Neck Bridge!
One of my warm memories is watching him fix things
around my mother's apartment. It was a joy to know how easily he filled my father's shoes that way, and how much I knew that loving care meant to my mother.
I'm very thankful that I was able to speak with him at length at my nephew's wedding, and see the radiant joy he felt being there. I just wish there could be more such opportunities to chat.

Monte was the best high school boyfriend that any girl could imagine or expect. He was wonderful. Monte loved sailing, having adventures, creating things out of found objects, and lending a hand when needed (such as shoveling my parents walk and driveway whenever it snowed.). He loved Star Trek, Wild, Wild West, and thought that I looked like Emma Peel from The Avengers....how nice is that? Our deep friendship continued throughout our lives. Monte would see my daughter perform in shows, help my husband repair things (alright, Monte would make the repairs) and join us at my sons' wedding. He visited us regularly for his birthday...what a treat for me... He remained an important part of my life and that of my entire family. Monte and I went to our last High School Reunion together, and had a great time. We stopped by our old houses, the pools at Harbor Hills & Great Neck Estates, walked through town..... My writing skill can not express my gratitude and admiration that I had for Monte. I find it very difficult to accept that he has died.

I vividly remember Monte in high school as a smart, studious classmate in Mr. D's chemistry class. It was a free for all and he was singled out by a bully but he kept his cool and displayed a single minded discipline without succumbing to the ridiculous goings on around him. A class act all the way.
