Patrick Lunn Obituary

Patrick Lunn
September 17, 1945 - March 21, 2022
Coral Gables, Florida - My husband Patrick Charles Lunn left his physical body on March 21, 2022. A Miami native, he was born to Charles & Sylvia Lunn on Sept 17, 1945. He attended Fairlawn Elem & fell in love with learning at a young age, mentored by his sister Colleen, an educator 14 years his senior. Math, Science & Literature were important subjects in the Lunn family home. Patrick's dad was a "Key Wester" who was the navigator on Pan Am's 1st transatlantic flight; his mom had the distinction of typing up Hemingway's final draft of "The Sun Also Rises."
"Pat" attended U of Miami as an undergrad & also received a Masters in EDU there in 1970, the same year he married me, Cheryl Sandoz. We had two wonderful sons, Patrick & Michael.
He went on to develop the #1 Magnet Science & Math Program in the early '90s at Stirrup Elem, where students from across Dade Cty were drawn into the world of technology. During his 25+ yrs at Stirrup, Pat & his Magnet team orchestrated field trips to NASA & countless Youth Fair science projects. He was rewarded by many cherished letters from former students forever grateful to him for helping shape their young minds in the Sciences.
On weekends, Pat & our boys fished, bowled, played softball & cheered on the Miami Hurricanes & Shula's Dolphins. Countless family trips were made to the old Key West homestead where Pat's father grew up; we mountain-biked in UT, NC & FLA; made ski trips to Utah & Whistler; attended Rush & Pink Floyd concerts at the Orange Bowl. There were also wonderful weekends on Pat's Harley FXR with me riding on the back.
In 2003 Dr. Lameles replaced a heart valve with a pioneering non-invasive procedure. Pat was like new again. He called his surgeon "The Boy Wonder!" But in his last year of teaching, 2013, the dark cloud of Parkinson's descended. He gamely punched the bags in Tropical Park's Parkinson's Boxing Program, but the disease ultimately robbed him of his ability to walk, talk, read or write. Yet Pat could smile without complaint.
Ironically the COVID lockdown was good for us, with many hugs & reminiscences, visits from grandchildren Olivia & Brayden, our sons helping with doctor appointments & early morning house-calls from the caring 911 Coral Gables Rescue Squad angels, whose visits often ended in laughter. Through it all, Pat was steadfast, a wonderful man, daddy, granddad, friend & husband.
Parkinson's ultimately wore Patrick out, but we had 52 memorable years together. In death his spirit was renewed & remains forever in his family's heart & soul.

Mr. Lunn was my teacher in 5th grade, one of those teachers that leave an imprint. Searched him up via Google today curious to see if I find him anywhere and I am saddened to learn he has moved on to the next life. Few teachers like him, where you still remember them 20 years later. RIP Mr. Lunn.

Pat was my closest friend for more than 60 years. He was a wonderful man full of love and kindness. From little league baseball through our teaching together at Douglas and Riverside Elementary Schools, Pat was always there. We traveled together, rode bikes , bowled, played softball, and played golf. Pat was the best friend anyone could have. He will always be with us. We love him very much.
