Sherrie Garfield

1927 - 2018

Sherrie S Garfield died September 26, 2018 at her home in Coconut Grove. She leaves a daughter Carolyn Cass, a son Walter Lieber and a step daughter Linda Cash. Grandmother of 6 and a great grandmother of 12. She was preceded in death by her spouse Joseph A. Garfield in 2002. Born in New York City September 7, 1927, graduated from the School of Business in New York city and went on to reside in Shreveport, La for 18 years. While living in Shreveport she participated in a home for unwed mothers and in other charitable endeavors and raised a family in between. Moving to Florida in 1964 she established and operated her own business in Ft. Lauderdale in 1969 when she married Joseph A. Garfield who served Cedars Medical Center for 18 years as Director, Trustee and Secretary. She was a member of the Society of the University of Miami Grand Founders and served as a board member and benefactor for Cedars Medical Center Foundation. After her husband's death Mrs. Garfield became a supporter and Grand Founder to the research of Age Related Neurological Disorders in memory of her beloved husband Joseph A. Garfield (1901-2002) and the University of Miami School of Medicine Department of Neurology and the Diabetes Research Institute (2002-2013) In addition, a founder of Baptist South Miami Hospital Child Development Center (2014 to present) Director of the Joseph and Sherrie Garfield Charitable Foundation (2002 to present) Annual contributor in the Lion Category of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation Women's Department. Supported "The Betty and Leonard Phillips Deaf Action Center" of Shreveport, Louisiana (1991) The National children's Cancer Society gave her recognition in 1999 for her support. Founder of the "Garfield Library" at the Zeitlin School in Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel (April 2012) Life member to The Heritage Society of Temple Israel of Greater Miami. In lieu of flowers the family is suggesting donations be made to Baptist South Miami Hospital "Child Development Center or to "charity of your choice" Sherrie S. Garfield 91 died September 26 at 12:30 pm at her residence in Coconut Grove, Florida Burial Friday September 28th at Mt. Nebo Cemetery 5505 NW 3rd Street Miami, Fl Visitation at Walter and Linda Lieber's home Friday 1 pm to sundown and Sunday September 30th at 1 pm to sundown.
