Sophia Gumenick Obituary

GUMENICK, SOPHIA. The family and leadership of the Miami Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged extend its solemn sympathy and regrets on the passing of Sophia Gumenick, a Grand Humanitarian FOUNDER at our Home and a grand woman to have known in life. A tireless supporter of educational programs and care for the elderly, Mrs. Gumenick and her FOUNDER husband Nathan, of blessed memory, generously endowed a namesake Respite Center for Alzheimer's patients in North Miami Beach and, subsequently, the Sophia & Nathan Gumenick Respite Services. In 1985, the Home dedicated a wing in the Chernin Building to honor the benefactors, who also served as Double Grand NOTABLES of the Alzheimer's Care Committee/NOTABLES. "Aunt Sophie" was also a member of the Home's Greater Miami Women's Auxiliary, and held membership in the elite Gift of the Heart Society. Her presence in our FOUNDERS family will be deeply missed, and her memory will always be a gift. Our thoughts go out to her beloved friends and family, including son, Jerome and grandson Randy. Signed: Irving Cypen, Chairman of the Board and Honorary President; Harold Beck, President and Chief Executive Officer; Wayne A. Cypen, FOUNDERS President; Bella Goldstein, President and Founder of NOTABLES; Fred Stock, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director; Lourdes A. Boue, Chief Financial Officer; Dr. Daniel T. Brady, Executive Director Community Based Services; and Norma A. Orovitz, Director of Development. To visit this Guest Book Online, go to www.herald.com/obituaries.

Hi Jerry,

I send late, but heartfelt condolences. I remember well vacationing with my parents, Herman and Harriet Gumenick in Miami Beach and strolling along Collins Ave. with Nat and Sophie, as well as visiting them, and you at the cabana at the Fountainebleau.

I have been living in California for the last 26 years and have three grown children myself.

God bless you and yours,

Neil R. Gumenick

Our heartfelt sympathy to the loved ones of Sophie. Knowing Sophie and being her doctor years ago was a privelege and a pleasure.

I had the honor of knowing and serving mr. and Mrs. Gumenick for nearly 13 years while working at "La Petite France" in Richmond, Virginia in the 1970s and early 80s, they will always be remembered by me for their kindness and their good hearths.
