Sy Eisenberg Obituary

Sy Eisenberg
September 3, 1930 - December 14, 2021
Miami Beach, Florida - Seymour Joseph Eisenberg, referred to by his family and friends as Sy, passed away on Dec 14th at the age of 91. Sy was born and raised in Hartford, Connecticut. He attended schools in New York and Connecticut and studied for a doctorate in business at Nova University. Sy served in Etzel in 1947 and in the US Army during the Korean war. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Jewish War Veterans, and the American Legion for over 60 years and proudly attended Veterans Day events.
In 1957, Sy established a manufacturing company in Hialeah with 12 employees. At the height of the company's success, 2500 workers were employed and it became a publicly traded company. During the 1960's, when the Cuban refugees arrived in Miami desperately looking for work, Sy employed over 500 in his factory and spoke to them in Spanish. Subsequently, he became involved in real estate, insurance, investment banking, securities, and mortgages.
The future of the City of Miami Beach deeply interested Sy and he decided to run for commission. He was elected for four terms, whereby he became acting mayor, vice mayor, and city commissioner between 1981 and 1998. He was chairman of the Finance Committee and Capital Improvements committee. He played an integral part in major funding for the City of Miami Beach and led the city in creating the convention hotel district.
Sy represented the City of Miami Beach on the National League of Cites and was a director and officer of the Florida and Dade League of Cities. He served on the Board of Governors of the State of Florida Insurance Commission, JUA, and on the Board of Governors of Barry University. He was a founder of Beth Israel Congregation, a board member of the Hebrew Academy, and a Pacesetter at Miami Jewish Federation.
Sy was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan and played tennis for over 50 years in Flamingo and North Shore parks.
His wife of 64 years, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will miss his unusual intellect, stories, and Torah thoughts.
Donations can be made in his memory to the Jewish War Veterans.

I just returned to Florida and learned of the passing of Sy. He was a good friend and a wonderful and generous human being. He will be missed by all you had the privilege of calling him a friend or colleague. My deepest and heartfelt sympathies to Barbara and his children and great grandchildren whom he loved deeply.
