ZAYDON, DR. THOMAS JOHN, SR., passed away with his family at his side on January 12, 2012. He was born in Eynon, PA on July 14, 1920. He came from close loving Lebanese immigrant ancestry that valued heritage, religion, family and education. His widowed mother and his siblings raised him. Dr. Zaydon, Sr. graduated high school in Peckville, PA in 1937. In 1941, he graduated with a B.S. from Penn State University. Then graduated from Hahnemann/ Drexel Medical College in 1944. Dr. Zaydon was a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgeons and a Fellow of American College of Surgeons. Dr. Zaydon was a founding member and active participant in St. Jude Melkite Catholic Church, serving on the Board until just before his death. He was a member of the Knights of Malta, the Order of the Holy Sepulcher. He was former chief of plastic surgery at Miami Heart Institute, St. Francis, Mount Sinai and Mercy Hospital. He was a valued member of the Aesculapian Society. He was past president of Florida Society of Plastic Surgery. He was a founding staff member of South Miami Hospital. He was a lifetime member of Florida Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, and American Society Aesthestic of Plastic Surgeons. He received numerous civics, religious and professional awards. He received the 2011 Dade County Medical Association Lifetime Achievement award. St. Jude's Catholic Church was dedicated to Dr. Zaydon and was previously presented an award for 33 years of parish service. He also served as President of the Parish Council. Dr. Zaydon loved his family, his church and his work. He embodied Carpe Diem. In 1950 he was married to Helene Marie Joseph, daughter of Sam and Bea Joseph. He was preceded in death by beloved first wife Helene and is survived by his wife Mary Jo Evancho Zaydon. Dr. Zaydon is survived by eight children, Dr. Thomas Zaydon, Dr. Samuel Zaydon, John Zaydon, Tama Zaydon, Helene Zaydon-Hart, Joseph Zaydon, James Zaydon, and Louis Zaydon. Memories and Condolences
for THOMAS ZAYDON

Not sure what to say?

Bob Fabric, M.D,

January 8, 2025

I remember that Tom, Sr. was an instructor in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Miami School of Medicine. I remember my first exposure to a 'real' private physician when he taught my class of freshmen medical students the anatomy of the skull. We were assembled in the 2nd floor auditorium in the Central Bldg. at JMH in the days prior to Power Point and fancy slides. Dr. Zaydon, Sr. would sit on the edge of the stage as we gathered around him showing us the anatomy while he held a skull in his hands. We were all
enthralled with his knowledge and his willingness to make difficult areas of anatomy understandable. I also remember Tom, Sr.'s family attending the Florida SPS's and Tom, Jr. crawling under the banquet tables. I am certain that Tom, Sr. as most of our colleagues would say they are also proud of Tom, Jr.

Dr. Zaydon, Sr. will always be remembered as an outstanding clinician and a wonderful person.

God speed Dr. Zaydon,
In 1956 when I was 16 you saved my foot after a motorcycle accident and changed my life. When others wanted to amputate my foot you said no, and several operations and three skin grafts later I walked. I went on to become a commercial pilot and retire as a senior 747 Captain for a major airline. I still fly today. Surely my life would have turned out differently were it not for your skill and care. I am a father, grandfather and great-grandfather because of you. My deepest sympathy to your family.
Greatfully and respectfully,
Lawrence Eugene Owen, Jr.

Dear Zaydon Family,

I worked in Dr. Zaydon's office for more than 25 years. It was truly a privilege to have an employer as kind and generous as Dr. Zaydon. I will always remember how he treated every patient with caring and benevolence no matter what their curcumstances were. In our lives we meet far too few people of such great character as Dr. Zaydon; he will be long remembered by me (and my son Charles).

I read of Dr. Zaydon's passing in the Sunday Miami Herald. I worked with him at the former St. Francis Hospital on Miami Beach many years ago. He was always the professional in every sense of the word. The nurses respected him & his patients loved him. It was an honor to see him at a hospital reunion we had years ago. Dear Mary Jo, Helene, Tom and all of Tom's wonderful family,

Tom was one of the most wonderful men that I have ever known. I can remember very well of all of the many many many dedicated hours he spent in being one of the founders of St. Jude Melkite Catholic Church. In the early days, I worked side by side with him and he was truly a great inspiration to me as he guided me in many things. I know that he always had the utmost respect and love for my parents and that the feeling was mutual. They thought the world of him as a very dear friend. I know that I can always say Thank God for Tom. On behalf of Marie and myself please accept our sincerest condolences and know that we miss him dearly.

Although I only met Dr. Zaydom once during the occasion of the marriage of his son, Sam to Jenee, he made me feel comfortable in my role as pastor and made me feel almost as part of the family. As a matter of fact, the entire family was gracious and kind to a point, which speaks of the love and the value he instilled in all the members of his family.
