WILLIAM ARCHER Obituary

ARCHER, WILLIAM B. July 7, 1923 - March 5, 2010 William B. Archer of Miami passed away peacefully on March 5th, 2010, at Baptist Hospital. He was 86 years old. Bill Archer succumbed to complication of treatment for leukemia. He was originally diagnosed in 2003 with myelodysplasia, a bone marrow disease, leading to leukemia in late 2009. Bill fought a positive, energetic, determined and courageous battle, coming so close to beating his illness. Bill was the most beloved husband to his wife Gloria, recently celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. He was the most devoted father to his children, who all survive him: Patricia Ann Archer of Miami, James Douglas Archer, and his wife Sandy of Round Rock, Texas, and William Bruce Archer and his wife Roxanne of Miami. He was a loving grandfather to Michelle Archer, Mackenzie Archer, Skyler Archer, Alexandra Archer, and Samantha Funk. He is also survived by his sister, Lynda Bader of South Carolina, many nieces and nephews, and preceded in death by his sister, Toni Mintzer. Born in East Point Georgia near Atlanta, Bill grew up, working to support his mother and sisters, in the Great Depression. As a teenager in the late 1930's, Bill was fascinated by airplanes and volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol, where he received his very first flying lessons. In high school he joined the ROTC and was president of his high school senior class. When he joined the Naval Air Corp in 1941, he entered flight school and excelled as an aviator. Earning and receiving his commission as a Naval officer, he proudly served his country in wartime as a flight instructor at Pensacola Naval Air Station. After WWII, Bill Archer remained in the Naval Reserve and returned to Atlanta where he married Gloria Bruce, entered Emory University to study journalism, and worked for the Atlanta Constitution as a cub reporter. Quite unexpectedly, Bill was offered a job as a pilot with one of the new airlines forming after the war. Joining National Airlines in 1946, he moved with his new wife to Miami where they began their family. During his thirty-seven year career with National, and ultimately Pan American Airlines, Bill participated in the phenomenal growth of the post- war airline industry. He began his commercial flying as a copilot on twin-engine Lodestars flying passengers around Florida, Gulf and Atlantic coast cities and Havana; He ended his career flying the latest and most sophisticated commercial aircrafts, the DC-10, mostly to London and Europe. In the late 1950's Bill Archer served as president of the local chapter of the AirLine Pilots Association. Later he took a position as one of National's supervisory "check pilots". During this 20 year period, one of his duties included developing training programs and instructing company pilots on new equipment like the Locheed Electra, Boeing 727 and finally the DC-10. He loved his work and set a high standard for excellence. Bill Archer ea rned the respect and admiration of all who truly knew him, for his keen intelligence, uncompromising integrity, and dedication to always be the best he could be at whatever he did. He loved the western tales of Zane Grey, and the poems of Kipling, and Robert Service. He had a wonderfully wry wit, and was known for his engaging and entertaining speaking and story telling. He will always remain a strong and guiding inspiration to his children, family, and friends. For over fifty years, Bill was involved and participated in supporting Haven Center, and in recent years, Friends and Families of Sunrise Opportunities, serving in past years as treasurer. A celebration of the life of Bill Archer will be shared with a gathering of family and friends at 1:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday March 18th, 2010, at Van Orsdel Funeral Chapel, 11240 No. Kendall Drive, Miami, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the non- profit Supporters of Sunrise, Inc., 6101 SW 90th Court, Miami, Fla. 33173, and organization helping special needs children and adults. Capt. Bill Archer was probably the best,
most complete pilot I ever flew with.
He had a great sense of humor, kept you laughing the entire trip, great storyteller. always a complete professional. I really loved flying with Bill. He was a great teacher, and had a outstanding memory for detail.
We will miss this good man. Sincerely,

Capt. Bill Archer was a very good friend of my father's, Capt. Walter Kuehner. They were buddies from the hay days at National Airlines. I have vivid memories of the days when my father was building a home built airplane in his garage, Bill and a few of the good old National boys: Red Beach & Gil Glasgow would frequent my dad's "workshop" and throw their two cents in about how things should be done. They sure had a good time chewin' the fat around the Q2. My dad's "final flight" was in February of 1995 and Bill so graciously accepted the task of giving my father's eulogy at his services. His detailed memories of days gone by with my father were both touching and humorous. My father always spoke well of Bill and respected him as a friend and a pilot. Our family will miss Bill and send our deepest sympathies to his family that remains behind.

Sincerely,

Gloria,

I sure did admire your " DEAREST BILL.". I loved flying with him in the 50's and 60's out of Miami , mostly to New York and other National Airlines flights on the Lockheed Connies. He always looked out for the well being of the "Stews" on his trips. I can still hear his strong voice over the Public Address system greeting our passengers.

In later years it was my pleasure to issue travel passes for you and
Bill after he had retired. Just being in his company again lifted my
spirits for that day.

He will be missed at our Buccaneers luncheons and conventions.

He may have taken his last "Flight West " but you need to know that
this flight was surely a smooth one! My love and sympathy go out to
you and your family.

Bill Archer was our neighbor for over thirty years. He and Gloria welcomed us in 1977 when we bought the house next door to theirs from Herb Rau . Over the years we shared stories, mangoes, and avocados, and we picked up each others' mail when needed. After Hurricane Andrew, Bill and Gloria's hand-pumped well provided our drinking water. We miss him, and we extend our deepest sympathies to Gloria, his kids and grandkids, and his extended family.

Uncle Bill you are one of my heroes and have always been such an amazing person in my life. We shared so many wonderful times together and I will keep them with me always. I grew up loving the ocean and all it's wonders and I owe a lot of that to you for sharing your love of the outdoors with me. I can remember us hiking in West Virginia at Pipestem or out on the reef snorkeling in the Keys with Aunt Gloria and friends...I had a dream about a day we went fishing and you said, "Look over the side of the boat, Miss, and you won't believe what you will see!" It was the biggest school of Mahi Mahi I had ever seen. They were practically jumping in the boat!
You told great stories and sometimes we would laugh til we couldn't anymore. I loved hearing about the family and all the different people you met on your travels. Thank you for being the best Uncle and friend and for always being there...Love to all and God Bless...Missy

It is of deep sadness that I received word of your father's passing. He was always so dearly respected as I remember him at National and thru the friendship with my father, Bob..I know you will dearly miss him and It was always so wonderful seeing him at The Big Cheese, when I would come back to visit Miami...Your parents were very dear friends to my parents through out their airline carrier, and a very devoted friend to my father..In my heart he will be deeply missed as I always looked forward to seeing him during my visits...It also made me feel that a part of my father was still around seeing one of his dearest friends. ...My heart goes out to you and your family, Bill...he truly was a gift to this world.

Bill was an exceptional person and an expert pilot. That booming voice of his will forever echo in every clap of thunder. He will be missed by all of us who were better pilots because of his insight and coaching during our early days. There will never be another like him! Have a good flight west, Captn!

Dear Billy,
I have thought about you over the years, we went to Miami Christian, you had a crush on Donna Mannuel and I had a crush on Eddie? None the less, I am writing to tell you how much I enjoyed reading about your father's life. It reminded me of my father whom I lost to the same Myodysplasia 2 years ago this past February. My father was my best friend, so I can only imagine how this loss is affecting your loved ones. I will say a prayer for your family indeed. Sincerely,
Julie Cooper
