Rod was a great mentor of mine. He was a positive competitor, a father figure that compared to my great father, a class act and a guy with a big heart. I was really close to his oldest son Rick whom I met in Scouts which developed into a friendship of Scouting to playing sports together to joining the service at almost the same time. Of course Rick joined the Navy (I will forgive him for that) and I joined the Marines, but when we were on leave together in K Falls we made some noise and partied way too hearty. With that, Rod protected us and our youthful insanity and we both turned out to be pretty good for the benefit of our great country.
Rod was a family man and his bride Alice was from the same cut of cloth and she was also "mom." They were both fabulous parents and their kids prove it.
Two stories I would like to tell, which proves his love for the Lesueur's. First was in about 1970 we were snow camping at Annie Creek and I just exhausted myself. I was just sick and he drove me home and i slept for 20+ hours. Like a concerned father he called every day for a week checking in on me. The second was my Dad's funeral when he came through the receiving line he cried for my father and my family with tears that said he was going to miss his great friend.
How can a family top the love this man showed to us. You can't because he was real and wasn't afraid to show his love. My God, how in the world are we going to replace this man?
For now we just have memories ........Well Scoutmaster.....you are now checking kids in sleeping bags in heaven making sure they are OK. Plus you and Clem, Bill Trumble and Gene Cook are sipping some Crown around the fire telling the same jokes over and over again doing what your generation did. You taught us how to be men and for that I am indebted to you forever.
Love you and thanks for being such a good part of my life.
Semper Fi.... Always faithful.
