Ruth Schorr Obituary

Ruth Averett Schorr 97 passed away in her home with her loving family by her side on February 10, 2023. She was born on July 5, 1925 to George and Evalee Averett in Alabama. After graduating high school she then moved to Mobile, Alabama and worked as a secretary for the Air Force where she met her first husband Dean Lewis. Ruth and Dean traveled to many places, one of her favorites being Hawaii. They moved to Klamath Falls, OR in 1959 where they raised four children. Ruth retired from JCPenny's after working as a sales associate for 15 years. Ruth's favorite hobby was being in the Ham Radio Club (K7RFO). Where she met many lifelong friends from around the country and the love of her life Andy Schorr, her second husband. This last year she was honored for her 61 years of dedicated service to the club. After retirement Ruth enjoyed attending the radio club events, checking into the net every night, cooking, baking, and taking care of her Grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Andy Schorr, her Sons Mike and Don Lewis, Grandchildren Jackie Baker and Shelly Anderson. Survivors include Daughter Lynda Baker, Son Larry (Sonja) Lewis, and many Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, and Great Great Grandchildren. Ruth was very special to many of us and will be greatly missed. At her request there will not be a service but a private burial was held. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Klamath County Food Bank.

You were a class act Ruth. I knew you from ham radio and the get togethers put on by the OEN. Frank Spratt (WK7F)

Here it is almost 2 months after your passing, and I still catch myself thinking "I need to call Ruth!"
Ruth Schorr was a friend, mentor, and sometimes a second Mom to me when I needed good advice. When I became more active in the OEN (Oregon Emergency Net) in the late 1990's, I, like every other aspiring Net Control worked to be as good at it as Ruth was. We all tried, but we all failed, as she was simply the best. I could go on for pages but the only thing I need to say is that my life was enriched by having Ruth as my friend and I loved her dearly.

When I began ham radio late in life in 2015, I heard Ruth call in every night on the OEN. She was such a joy to listen to. So confident and professional. I never met or spoke to her, but it was easy to tell she was a kind person because she had a kind voice. I will miss hearing her on the air.

Ruth was a special person, on the
Net she could pick out operators and
Copy them down on paper faster than I could. A recent trip to Winnemucca, NV out camping with
My wife Karen, I setup a hf radio and
Called 3980 at 6pm. Ruth answered
And I almost jumped, that's how. Loud she was.. wow.. Lovely Lady is
All I can say.. A shock to us all, I'm
Still in mourning.. R.i.p. Ruth...Love.

The first time I checked into the net, Ruth was the person that relayed my 100 watt station in. I appreciated that and all the other times she helped me out until I got an amp and the few times I needed help when conditions were bad.

Ruth was always there to relay people in outer distances that net control could not here. I heard of the award that Ruth was going to be honored with for her service and wanted so much to see her but I passed because of covid thinking I would meet her at one of the picnics. To bad that will never happen now. She was a special person in this world and God knows we all need more like her.
73s Ruth. I am sure your antenna is high in the sky now.

We will miss Ruth on the frequencies. She was a dedicated ham and served the community so well through her dedicated work.

Ruth was always a joy to be around. I met her when I became a ham radio operator in Chiloquin and realized what a special person she was. She was always positive about life and her work with ham radio and those around her. Her ability to recognize a voice on the radio and remember their call sign was truly amazing to me. I'll miss the phone calls for sure.
