Theodore "Ted" Gehrman passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. Ted lived a life rooted in curiosity, adventure, and service-changing the world not by force, but through dedication to education, love for his family, and a deep respect for the cultures and communities he encountered throughout his life.
Ted was born on November 20, 1932, in Eugene, Oregon, and from a young age, displayed determination and thoughtfulness that would define his life. He was the first in his family to attend college, earning a football and baseball scholarship to Southern Oregon University right out of high school. His time there was cut short, however, when he entered into the U.S. Navy, where he became a pilot. Later in life, he would purchase his own airplane and continued flying for fun well into his later years, savoring the freedom and joy of the skies.
Following his military service, Ted went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Oregon, where his love of learning took root-and so did his unwavering devotion to the Oregon Ducks, a passion he carried proudly throughout his life.
Ted met the love of his life, Muriel Fay (Morgan) Gehrman, while teaching at Blossom Gulch Elementary School in Coos Bay, Oregon. They were married on December 24, 1959, and spent nearly 58 years together before Muriel's passing in 2018. Their love story was one of deep partnership-built on shared values, mutual respect, and a joint calling to educate and uplift others, both at home and abroad.
A lifelong learner and educator, Ted went on to earn his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) from the University of Massachusetts, further cementing his commitment to educational leadership. While living in Massachusetts, Ted and Muriel welcomed their only daughter, Tiare Michele, who was born on September 30, 1970-a joyful milestone in the midst of their academic and teaching pursuits.
Ted's career took him around the globe, where he served as the headmaster of several international schools in places such as Germany, Ethiopia, Ecuador, Singapore, and Tanzania. Known for his steady leadership and visionary approach, Ted helped shape the lives of countless students and educators worldwide.
After many years abroad, Ted and Muriel returned to
Klamath Falls, Oregon, where they put down lasting roots. There, Ted served as the Director of Secondary Curriculum and Federal Programs for many years, continuing his legacy of leadership and mentorship in the field of education.
Ted was not just an educator and leader; he was a proud father, a beloved grandfather, and a man of many talents. He cherished his family above all. He is survived by his daughter Tiare Michele Gehrman Schlenker, son-in-law Jeff Schlenker, and grandchildren Kiana, Kaikea, Kalea, and Makai. He is now reunited with his dear Muriel, whom he loved beyond measure.
Those who knew Ted will remember his warm laugh, unwavering sense of purpose, and ability to find home wherever he was in the world.
A celebration of Ted's life will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2025, in Spokane, Washington, where friends and family will gather to share stories, honor his memory, and reflect on the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
A local gathering will also take place in Klamath Falls on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Eternal Hills Memorial Gardens. All who knew Ted are warmly invited to attend. Following the Klamath Falls service, attendees are welcome to join the family at Abby's Pizza - Campus location - for a time of fellowship and remembrance.
As we say until we meet again to Ted, we hold tightly to the love he shared, the warmth he brought, and the memories he created. Though his presence may have receded from our daily lives, like the tide, he has left behind countless beautiful treasures in our hearts. His kindness, laughter, and spirit will forever be cherished, reminding us that love never truly leaves-it simply transforms, living on in the hearts of those he touched.
