Charles Vernon Smith, age 94, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, January 19, 2021.

Charles was born in Welch, W.Va., on November 4, 1926. He was a World War II veteran that served his country in the U.S. Navy. He retired from Titan Wheels in Saltville. Charles was a faithful member of Chilhowie First Church of God and loved his church family. Most of all, he was a devoted family man that truly loved being a father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles William and Margie Collie Smith; his wife, Emma Sue Smith; son, Michael Smith; and a brother, Harold Smith.

Charles is survived by his two daughters, Debbie Hall and husband, Rick and Becky Scyphers and husband, Steve; grandchildren, Shannon Hearl and husband, Randy, Courtney Alley and husband, Matthew, Samantha White and husband, Trey, and Laura Beth Harris and husband, Karl; great-grandchildren, Madison Miller, Cole Miller, Olivia and Sadie Alley, and Ally, Parker, and Brady White; step grandchildren, Jacob Scyphers and Audrey Holley and husband, Bruce; step great-grandchildren, Leighton, Malena, Landon, and Cody Hearl; several nieces, nephews, and his church family.

The family would like to express a special Thanks to Hometown Hospice in Chilhowie and to his nurse Caleb Roland for their care given to Charles and the family.

Private graveside services will be held at Mt. Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring with Pastor Bobby Dunn officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Francis Marion V.F.W. Post 4667.

I am so sorry to hear of Vern's passing. Our families hadn't been in touch in recent years but I recall him and my dad, Joe Miller, being such good buddies at work and at church. We also miss the friendship he and Sue shared with mom. Vern had such a good sense of humor and lively personality. He was truly a good man. He will be sadly missed.
