David Snyder Obituary

David Alan Snyder Sr.

May 20, 1950 - May 14, 2021

David Alan Snyder Sr., 70, went to be with the Lord on Friday May 14, 2021, after battling Lewy Body Dementia for six years. He passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his wife and two sons.

David was born in Danville, Pa., on May 20, 1950, to Dr. John C. and Pauline Snyder. They moved to Bristol in 1953, where he spent most of his life.

David was a graduate of Tennessee High School, class of 1968, where he was a football standout, receiving the Most Valuable Player award for the 1967-1968 football squad. He graduated from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 1982 with a B.S. in Accounting and went on to acquire his Certified Public Accounting licensure. After several years of private practice, he became one of the original employees for Friendship Automotive, retiring as the company's Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in 2017—spanning a 24-year career.

David enjoyed the finer things in life: scotch, cigars, spending quality time with his family, and getting frustrated at his beloved Tennessee Volunteers. He was a former member of the Bristol Morning Rotary Club, serving a stint as its president and several years as its treasurer. Due to his service with the rotary, he became a Paul Harris Fellow. He also served as an assistant scoutmaster for Troop 3 of the Boy Scouts of America in Bristol, Tenn., helping guide many young men towards their Eagle rank. He was a lifelong member of St. Anne Catholic Church and participated in its affiliated Knights of Columbus chapter, Chapter 6695, earning his 4th Degree. However, his ultimate passion in life was tennis, especially playing mixed doubles with his wife and several friends on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

He is survived in life by his wife of 43 years, Deborah Lynn Snyder (Stiles); two sons, David Alan Jr. and Andrew John and his wife, Kristi; his two granddaughters, Marli Louise and Oakleigh Pauline; sisters, Clare Snyder-Branch, Mary Anne (Lee) Sowers, and Dr. Amy (Mike) Fitzgerald; brothers, John (Debbie) and Dr. Matt Snyder; sisters-in-law, Donna (Fred) Thomas and Leanne (Todd) Ardrey; brothers-in-law, Jack Stiles, Neil (Julia) Stiles, and Bob Harmon; uncles, Lou and Frank Gallo; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

David is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. John C. and Pauline Snyder; in-laws Jack and Louise Stiles; sister-in-law Cindy Harmon; Aunts Mary Sees and Roseanne Gallo; and Uncle Joe Gallo.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at Akard Funeral Home. A funeral mass will follow at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at St. Anne Catholic Church, with Father Christopher Hess officiating and Deacon Steve Helmbrecht assisting. The committal and interment will be held following the service at Glenwood Cemetery in Bristol, Tenn. Pallbearers will include John Snyder, Dr. Matt Snyder, Dr. Mike Fitzgerald, Lee Sowers, Neil Stiles, Butch Stiles, Fred Thomas, Todd Ardrey, and Bob Harmon.

"I love you yesterday. I love you still. I always have…I always will."

Tim and I are saddened at the passing of Dave. We know it doesn't compare with the devastating emotions you and the boys are feeling. There is no doubt Dave loved his family and was the rock for all of you to stand on. He was an honorable man. Tim and I are here waiting to hear what you might be needing, so let us know. God be with you and give comfort and peace and love.
