William Harold Pannell Jr., age 92, of Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born on November 29, 1929, in Goldfield, Iowa, son of the late William Harold Sr. and Edith Chambers Pannell.
Mr. Pannell was a U.S. Army Veteran. He retired from McDonald Douglas. He was an aeronautical engineer where he worked on the F15 Project. He had resided in the Bristol area since 2000 and was a member of Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane Barker Pannell; and sisters, Alice Halverson and Rachel Peterson.
Survivors include his son, Richard Pannell and wife, Lynn; grandchildren, William Pannell and wife, Hannah, and Michaela Pannell; and great-grandchildren, Graham Andrew Pannell and Everly Grace Pannell.
The funeral service for Mr. Pannell will be held 5 p.m. Monday, November 7, 2022, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor John Markel officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 until 5 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be held in Humboldt, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church, 3982 Lee Hwy, Bristol, VA 24201, The Haven of Rest, 624 Anderson Street, Bristol, TN 37620, or The Salvation Army, 137 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Bristol, TN 37620.

On the rare occasion when Rich and Lynn were going out of town, arrangements would be made for me to pick up something for dinner. Mr. Pannell was a wonderful conversationalist. We talked about the earth, other planets and star constellations. I will always be grateful for those conversations.
