BONHAM - Funeral services for Edna (Haggard) VanKirk, age 94 of Bonham will be held at 2 p.m., on Friday, September 9, 2011 at the Seventh and Main Baptist Church. Rev. Cody Nelson will officiate the services. Interment will follow at Willow Wild Cemetery. Mrs.
Edna Haggard VanKirk passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at her home, The Woodmoore Assisted Living Facility.
Edna Haggard VanKirk was born October 11, 1916 in Kiefer, OK. and was the last surviving child of Richmond Mason and Callie Jane Mize Haggard. She moved to Fannin County in 1934 and has lived here since. She married John VanKirk in Bonham, TX. on January 13, 1942; he preceded her in death on August 21, 1992.
Mrs. VanKirk graduated from Bonham High School in 1937, and received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from East Texas University. She taught school in Fannin County for 25 years, and taught a Sunday school class for over 50 years, and is a charter member of the Seventh and Main Baptist Church in Bonham.
Mrs. VanKirk was active in local organization, including heading up the blood drive during World War II, had served as President of the local VFW Auxiliary, and had also served as past District President. Mrs. VanKirk is also recognized and listed in "Who's Who of American Women".
Mrs. VanKirk is survived by grandchildren Marisa Newman, Tammi Morrisette, John Christopher VanKirk, Mathew Marcus VanKirk, step-grandchildren Mike Finney, Scott Finney, Carol McCord, and eight great-grandchildren.
Mrs. VanKirk is also preceded in death by father, Richmond Haggard, mother Callie Jane Mize Haggard, son John Craig VanKirk; granddaughter Valarie Denise Cravens, step-daughter Johnnie VanKirk Finney; brothers Green, Francis, R.M. and Thomas, and sisters Jewel Richards and Gladys Shastid.
Serving as pallbearers will be her nephews.
Family visitation will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2011 from 6-8 p.m., at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham.
