On Monday, August 11, 2025, Jean Wilcox, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away at age 89. She will be deeply missed by her family, neighbors, and friends who knew her as a woman of great inner strength and abiding faith.
Eva Jean Wilcox (Fluharty) was born on May 16, 1936 in Kooskia, Idaho where her adventurous parents, Dale and Eva Fluharty moved from Iowa to tame the land. She spent her early years in a one room log cabin with no electricity or running water. She inherited her parents' strength and grit which came to define her.
Jean moved to Kirkland during her early school days where she excelled as a student and graduated as salutatorian from Lake Washington High School. She also applied herself to competitive shooting and as a teenager was the Washington State Jr. Champion.
Jean met her husband, Jack, at a summer party on Whidbey Island and they were married June 23, 1956. They moved to Whidbey Island in 1968 where raising their two sons, Randy and Ken, became the focus of her energy. When her sons showed an interest in skiing, she learned how to ski. When the church needed a youth group leader, she volunteered. She drove a school bus because she loved kids. She welcomed numerous foster children into her home. She also welcomed animals. From rescued crows to flying squirrels, if you could catch it without harming it, you could keep it as a pet.
Jean's legacy as a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother is treasured by her family. She was strong and loving and was more interested in our character than our success. She gave selflessly to others and expected her family to do the same, and she passed along her unwavering Christian faith which continues to bless her family.
Jean is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, Jack; her brother, Robert Fluharty; her two sons and their spouses, Randy and Yanyu, Ken and Nadine; four grandchildren, Laura (Matt) Tanaka, Emily Wilcox, Rachel (Kevin) Haffey, Greg (Ella) Wilcox; and three great grandchildren, Logan, Levi and Lucas Tanaka. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her daughter-in-law, Sandy Seals Wilcox.
A celebration of Jean's life will be held on October 3rd at 2pm at the Useless Bay Country Club on Whidbey Island.
