Oliver Vuori Obituary

Oliver Edward Vuori
Aug. 28, 1916-Sept. 2009

Oliver was born 1916 in south side Aberdeen, Washington to Finnish immigrant parents, Ed and Lydia Wuori. He went to sleep peacefully in his Snohomish, Washington home September 20, 2009 at the age of 93.
He graduated from Ocosta High School in 1934 in the top 18 of his class. He always added, "Of course, there were only 18 in my class." He could speak and write fluent Finnish.
He graduated from Grays Harbor Community College in 1936 with a business degree and married his sweetheart Virginia Delight Pavola in 1939, after which they moved to Bremerton, Washington where Oliver spent a long 33 year career working for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He said he started working for 54 cents per hour. He retired at age 56 as a procurement agent and always enjoyed his daily lunch time pinochle game with the "guys in the office."
After Oliver and Virginia raised their three children, Dick, Bob and Rose, Oliver retired and they moved to Silverdale, Washington. There they enjoyed country life and their big garden shared with the Howard Bungards and later Bob Keiffers, until Virginia died in 1995. Oliver then moved to Snohomish to a condo to be near his son, Dick, where he still enjoyed gardening, chopping many cords of wood at Dick's, doing daily crossword puzzles, feeding birds, baking bread, watching "Mash" and sharing condo life with his nice neighbors at "10th Street Village." He took great pride in watching his six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren grow attending graduations, sporting events and birthday parties.
He leaves behind his sons, Dick (Merridee) Vuori, Bob (Christine) Vuori; daughter, Rose (John) Applegate; grandchildren, Ken (Wendy) Vuori, Joelle (Peter) Wagner, Carrie and Stefanie Vuori, Laura and Marja Applegate; great grand kids, Kendra and Nick Vuori, Jack Oliver Wagner; cousins, Helen Rosi and family, Impi and Pentti Vuorio in Finland and their families; and life long friend, Sylvia Katainen.
He will be buried along side his wife, Virginia, at the Finnish Brotherhood plot, Fern Hill, Aberdeen, Washington. There will be a private family Thanksgiving celebration of his life.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be donated to your local food bank.

Dick and family,
So sorry to hear about your dad and grandfather, Dick and Ken. I enjoyed visiting with him whenever the opportunity came about.

Vuori family,
We were very sad to hear that Oliver had passed away but was a blessing that he went peacfully and know that he is now in a better place. We too will miss him. As I passed the Gum Drop cookie recipe yesterday thought that one could go to the back of the box. No more cookies to pack and mail.

Love and prayers, Roy and Linda Brooks

Ken & Family and Dick & Family - so sorry to hear about your grandpa/dad. I remember stories you told about him at Westwood. He sounded like a nice man, someone that I would've wanted as a grandpa, too.
