Panos Koutlas Obituary

Panos (Pete) C. Koutlas, born in Everett, Wash. on August 20, 1928, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2016, with his loved ones at his side. A respected and quiet leader of the Everett community, Pete managed the family business, Farmers Garden Center, from 1953 until his retirement in 2000. Pete was a graduate of Everett High School and Washington State University. Upon graduation from WSU, he joined the US Army and was proud to serve his country during the Korean War. Pete was actively involved in the Everett community as a youth, and throughout his life provided unselfish dedication to numerous civic organizations. An Eagle Scout, he later served as a Council Commissioner of the Evergreen Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was the Charter President of the Evergreen Kiwanis Club, Vice President of the Saint Demetrios Church Parish Council, served on the City of Everett Planning Commission, a member of the 4-H Advisory Committee, advisor to the Everett School District Horticulture Department, Board member of the Luther Child Center and of the United Way. Intensely proud of his Greek heritage, Pete promoted Hellenism as a longtime member and President of the Everett Chapter of the Order of Ahepa. He was a member of the Masonic Order and the Everett Elks Club. A loyal Cougar fan, Pete was a Lifetime Platinum member of the Cougar Club. Pete's kindness and affection for his family was extraordinary. Pete had enormous respect and a deep love for his wife of 62 years, Toula, from whom he was seldom separated. He was proud of his son, Dean, daughter, Lynne (Douglas) Varey and his beloved grandchildren, Panos, Gus and Helen. Pete and Toula's grown children and grandchildren remained paramount throughout Pete's life. Family dinners and family vacations brought Pete great joy and happiness. Pete also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Margo; nephews, Ted (Natalie), Gabriel (Stacey) and niece Alexis and many other cousins, nephews, nieces and cherished friends. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, C.P. and Dialekti Koutlas, and his brother Fotis. A man of great character, honesty, integrity and humor, Pete will be profoundly missed. May his Memory be Eternal. Friends and family are invited to attend the Trisagion service Monday, May 30, 2016, 7:00 p.m. at Evergreen Funeral Home, 4504 Broadway Avenue, Everett. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 31, 11:00 a.m. at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2100 Boyer Avenue E, Seattle 98112, followed by a reception in the Church Hall. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery Mausoleum, Everett. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.

Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

Pete and I were best buddies in high school but ,as happens ,he went to one college I to another and then the service, I never returned to live in Everett so we only saw each other occasionally after that. Nevertheless the memories we shared were always there; making deliveries from his Dad's store, Blomberg's cabin, the track team, driving me with my date because I could not drive, just being a great pal. One of the best people I have ever known. You will be missed but never forgotten. Loved you Panos

Condolences to the entire Koutlas family. Even tho it has been many years I have memories of the old "feed store" which I grew up next to. Especially the sunflower seed bins and the farm like atmosphere before it became a modern store. Also staying at my grandparents home next to the Koutlas home next door. So sorry for your loss of such a great man.

What a great man. He was an absolute delight to work with and I learned so much from him over the years. Really enjoyed the rivalry we had between the Cougs and Dawgs. It was wonderful to have the one final visit with him last week and I know we both enjoyed it. May your memories of Pete be everlasting. God bless.

Pete, was one of a kind. I remember going into Farmers Garden Center often with my Dad. I was always very interested in the things I found there. I remember Pete asking me if I knew this, that, or the other thing about the things I was looking at, of course I didn't but he always spent time telling me what he knew about those things. I LOVED visiting the garden center and I'm sure it inspired my love of gardening today. I'm thankful for such a warm and loving person in my life. Mary Perin

One of the nicest guys I've ever known. When I was younger I used to stop and see him at the Farmer's Garden Center and always got the best life advice of all time.

Pete was always one of my favorite people due to his kind nature and gentle way. I loved his wry sense of humor and he always made me laugh. My heart, thoughts and prayers are with the Koutlas family. May all the souls of the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace. Penny Carpenter
