Peter Henning Obituary

Jan 3, 1922 to Jan 12, 2015 Peter Henning was born and raised in Stanwood, by his parents, Peter and Nannie Henning, immigrants from Sweden. After high school Peter ran a Jersey dairy farm in Arlington, Wash. During that time he was instrumental in the formation of Washington Milk Producers (part of Dairigold) and was the youngest director elected to the American Jersey Cattle Club. Always having an interest in science, in 1956 Peter attended the University of Washington and then the University of Colorado where he received a PhD in nuclear physics in 1964. He worked for Varian Associates, Palo Alto, Calif., in the medical radiation field until 1975. After returning to Washington he became a developer of commercial properties in the east Seattle area. He was predeceased by Helen, his wife of 59 years, and his son, Craig. He is survived by his children, Peter Richard Henning (Maxine), Cheryl Haworth (Don Andrews), Mark Henning (Michael Bell), daughter-in-law, Adeline Henning; and grandchildren, Eli Haworth, Matt Henning, Amanda Haworth, Kirsten Henning, and Jake Henning; and his great grandchildren, Matilde Starkweather and Harbor Clampitt. Memorial services will be held at the East Shore Unitarian Church, Bellevue, on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Housing Hope in Everett, Northwest Harvest in Seattle, or the charitable organization of your choice.

I am so sorry to hear about dear, dear Cousin Peter. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time as you finalize an amazing life which will leave a legacy beyond description. I am so blessed to have gotten to know and spend special times with my dear Peter. My dad will be waiting for him with a pinch, a joke and a boisterous laugh! Our hearts are heavy with the loss of a wonderful man who used every ounce of his God-given talents to better this world and those around him. We are so blessed to have spent quality time with him. It was good that God knew what a difference this man would make in the world so he allowed him to stay a little longer. However, no matter the time, age, or circumstances, there is no good time to lose someone -- you only lose them once and it is truly a part of your life gone. But, oh, what wonderful accomplishments and beautiful memories he left to live on forever! Peace and love to all of you as you wrap yourselves in the warmth of the wonderful memories!

Dear Peter, Cheryl, Mark and family,

It is with great sympathy that I write you. Dr. Henning was truly an accomplished man and one that will be sorely missed. I had the privilege to meet Peter and Cheryl at Brasserie Ten Ten in Boulder, where a fellow student and I had the opportunity to thank Peter for his generous contribution to our studies. What an honor it was to receive the Peter Henning Graduate Fellowship; it has been such a blessing for my graduate career. Without a doubt, it has helped me find a place in my research group, and I listed the award on my application for the NNSA SSGF fellowship, which I was pleased to receive in 2013. I am incredibly grateful for the recognition and benefits that have resulted from being named a Peter Henning fellow. I believe it has made a large, positive impact on my career.

I would like to thank you and Peter again for your gracious support, and to give you my deepest sympathies for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Please know that I think very highly of the man I met at Brasserie Ten Ten, and I aspire to be more like him.

With heartfelt condolences,
Benjamin Galloway

Peter was truly a gracious soul who loved widely and was well loved in return. We are rarely graced with someone with his qualities including his caring and intelligence. We will be sorely missed but fondly remembered.
