Rita Hooper Obituary

Rita Hooper, born Rita G. Oczkewicz on February 13, 1929, passed away, content in her sleep, on January 24, 2018. Rita was the youngest daughter of Albert and Lena Oczkewicz and sister to Albert, Margaret, Lloyd, and Jean (Cinckovich); all of whom preceded her in death. Rita was born in Everett, WA, was baptized at Immaculate Conception Church, and attended elementary, middle school and church there. Years later Rita faithfully volun-teered her services to the church until no longer able. She loved roller-skating to school almost every day, until the fourth grade when, sadly, her teacher told her to stop bringing her skates because the boys kept kicking them in the cloakroom. She loved to skate and Rita took this hard. After graduation from Everett High in 1946, Rita went on to Seattle University where she attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology. Rita met Robert S. Hooper while at Seattle U. They married in Seattle in September 1950 and, before moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico, Rita gave birth to her first son, Robert (married to Ellen). She went on to give birth to Steven (CathyBeth), Michael (Turquoise), Mary (Tom Lowery), Thomas (Dawn), and John (Lisa). As fate would have it, Rita divorced her husband, moved back to Everett in 1960 where she raised her six children. She worked full-time as a Medical Technologist at Providence Hospital in Everett. She worked over-time and volunteered to be on call to provide better opportunities for her kids. Her children also attended Immaculate Conception, Everett High and went on to attain college degrees. Some went on to earn advanced degrees in Law, Business, Science and Engineering. Rita's unwavering standards, dedication, and love for her children, were key to each of their successes. Rita's pride in her children extended to her 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren (soon to be eight!). She adored each and was delighted when she thought of them and when they would come to visit. Christmas brunch was a special occasion at grandma's house. Her 39 stockings were hung, and Rita's coveted cinnamon rolls were devoured; and her homemade cookies and raspberry jam were gifted to each family by the box load. Her grandchildren include Matthew, Steven (married to Laura), Catherine (Bill Miele), Collette (Richard Arechavaleta), Geoffrey (Jesse), Nathan (Elissa), Alena (Jason Lane), Chris, Keelan, Justin (Samantha), Jillian, Jessalyn, and Jace. Great-grandchildren include Margaret, Eleanor, Gaia, Willa, Robert and Richard Jr. Rita also had many nieces and nephews whom she warmly embraced in her heart. Rita was there for all in her family. Everyone's birthday was marked with a card in the mail and a phone call begun with her singing "Happy birthday to you...." Rita had a beautiful voice she shared in song. In her teens, she would sing live over the local radio station and later sang in the church choir. Rita took joy in viewing the performances and athletic endeavors of all her kids. For this outpouring of support, twice Rita was awarded Parent of the Year honors while her children attended Everett High. Rita lived a life of triumph and grace. She died in the house she was born brimming with love bestowed upon her from the support of her family and caregivers. She will forever remain in our thoughts, prayers and hearts. Her funeral will be at Immaculate Conception Church, February 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. A Rosary ceremony will be held February 9 at Evergreen Funeral Home beginning at 7:00 p.m. Rita asked donations be made to Immaculate Conception School. Great Lady, had life throw her lemons and she made lemonade. I lived in her closet for a couple days to hide out from my youth for awhile. Like I said she was great lady!

On this day, 2/10/2018, at the Celebration of your life, Rita/Mom, we wanted to share the words of our Shoshone/Wahpeton/Cherokee brother, Voice of Golden Eagle:

"Smoke and prayers search the skies,
For answers hiding behind our eyes.
This place is just a dusky trail.........
We walk, then pass beyond the veil."

Wopila!

Bill and I had the pleasure of becoming part of Rita's large extended family in 2012, when our son married Rita's granddaughter, Catherine. We looked forward to visiting with her at family gatherings and seeing her visible joy at being the matriarch of such a warm and happy clan.

Over the last six years Rita became, for us ,a wonderful model of how to live well and age with grace and dignity.
We will miss her.

My deepest condolences to Rita's children and family. I worked with Rita at Providence Hospital for over 25 years and she was instrumental in my life and career. I am saddened by her passing but blessed to have known her.

To the family. Your mother Rita was like a second mother to me growing up. To playing in the massive front yard to sleeping in your closet when I was not sure I wanted to go home.
She had a sixth sense about her for people that needed her. Truly an angel in this world.
Not to say she wasn't tough, to raise such a large family by herself she had to be.
With much love and prayers I offer the family my thoughts and smiles in this trying time and would do anything to help if called on.
Respectfully,

We send blessings of great joy to Rita/Mom as she completed all earthly lessons and has embarked on her swift journey to the everlasting beauty of the eternal Spirit world. In the Native way, with tobacco down and prayers up, we raise our hands to Rita/Mom in humble, loving gratitude.

To Rita's family, we offer blessings of strength, love, courage and compassion as you make the walk along your winding path of grief.
May the strength of your Ancestors & the faith in your spiritual calling carry you through the mourning of Rita/Mom's changing of worlds.

May time soften the pain
Until all that remains
Is the beauty of the memories;
And the lovealways the love.
~~~
When our loved one
Becomes a memory,
The memory becomes a treasure that
Enriches all the moments of our lives,
And becomes woven into the tapestry
of our being with
threads of silver & gold.
With heartfelt condolences..Turquoise & Mike Hooper
Dear Rita,
Our journey of friendship began right from the start. Our senses of humor matched, and we made a good team. Your road wasn't always easy, but your determination and perseverance inspired me daily. You had so much faith in God, and in your family.
THANK YOU, Rita, for all you taught me and for how you loved me. I also thank you for your amazing family. They continue to be my link to you and I treasure them dearly.
I believe that Heaven is more radiant now, because I just know your smile was so bright when you finally met Him.
God bless you, Rita.
Love forever,
To my Hooper brothers and sister. Thank you for sharing Momma Rita with me and my husband, John. I always felt like an extension of the family and it was and is the most wonderful gift. Mom will always be with me in so many of her teachings...especially while cooking! I love you all and know how very much this amazing woman will be missed. Heaven is a little richer and I know she was met with many hugs and so much love.
Mary,
My heart goes out to you, your family, your brothers, and their families as well. Your mom was an amazing woman and heaven got a very special angel with her passing. While she will be so deeply missed by all of you; she will live on through all of you, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren, all of whom were so lucky to have her amazing influence for so many years. I feel blessed to have been a small part of your mom's life, she was the best!
Much love,
Pam
Today I went out for a walk at lunch to take advantage of a rare sunny day. I instinctively reached for my phone to call you as I have done countless times before. How could I have known yesterday's call was my last? Mom I wanted to check on you, to see how you were doing, to tell you I love you, and before ending the call, how soon I would be coming to see you again. I put my phone away. I will not need that anymore to talk with you. Mom my mind and heart will always be filled with the memory and love of you. I do not know now when I will be coming up to see you, or how soon, but God willing, we'll get together later mom. Right now my whole being is pouring out I love you.
In loving honor of my precious mother I will be sending a donation in her name, to one of her favorite organizations, one which she happily volunteered during a portion of her retirement: St Vincent de Paul.
