Scott Morrow Obituary

Scott Briggs Morrow died on April 19 after a courageous eight-month battle against pancreatic cancer. Everett was Scott's hometown until college graduation. During those years Scott made many trips throughout the United States and Canada with family members and summers were spent at the family beach house at Priest Point. Scott graduated from Cascade High School in 1976. He played the tuba in the school's band where he served as president, member of the jazz choir (Del Sonics), member of Scott's Hi-Q team, participated in church mission trips and organized demonstrations against war and injustice. After graduating from Whitman College with a degree in political science, Scott became a VISTA volunteer in Seattle and developed his community organizing skills. He later worked at the Seattle Tenants Union. Direct action became an important tool he used to successfully address the injustices faced by many. As homelessness increased in the 1980's, Scott began helping those without homes to organize. SHARE/WHEEL was the result of that work. That organization became the largest provider of emergency housing in Seattle, utilizing a network of churches to shelter those who would otherwise be living alone on the streets. Scott later helped organize Nickelsville, the first organization in our region to use tiny homes to house the homeless. Like the SHARE sites, these villages were self-managed by the residents. Scott never waivered in his commitment to those who had been marginalized, helping them to develop their own voices to be heard.

Scott was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, W.C. (Clint) and Dorothy Briggs, and aunts Sandy Briggs and Barbara Briggs Dearth.

Those surviving are father Edward Morrow, mother Shirley Briggs Morrow, brother Todd Morrow, cousins Chris Dearth, Terra Lynn Dearth, Teresa Moreno, Nancy Mayer, Charlotte Cunningham and Margie Baker, and partner Peggy Hotes.

Services celebrating Scott's life will be held in Everett at Everett First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 7, at 11:00 AM and in Seattle on the grounds of St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral on Saturday, May 14, at 3:00 PM. Donations to continue Scott's work can be made to Nickelsville or SHARE/WHEEL at PO Box 2548, Seattle, WA 98111.

I had the pleasure of attending Whitman College with Scott where we lived in the same dorm for a couple of years and played in the band together. He was a kind and gentle soul so I was not surprised to learn of all he has done for others and especially those less fortunate in life. Learning of what he did with his life is incredibly humbling and certainly indicative of a good upbringing. He leaves a great legacy in Seattle and I am proud to have shared a brief but formative time in our lives together. May he rest in peace.

I had the pleasure of being Scott's band director at South Junior Middle School. I am so humbled by his accomplishments. Imagine what our lives would be if we all gave just 5 per cent of what Scott gave. Ed and Shirley though heart broken must be very, very proud.

Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your family member. I was an incoming freshman and new to marching band. Scott saw my uneasiness and immediately made me feel welcome and like I belonged. He was kind, mischievous, and funny. I lost track of him once he graduated, but remember him with fondness.

Dear Betty and family, please accept my condolences on Scott's passing. Even though I never met him personally, I know he was a person I would like to have spent time with. The world has lost a"bright light", and was made better because he was such a good part of it. My heart reaches out to you Betty, and your family.

I didn't know Scott much - he was a friend of my friend's brother when we were teens. But I remember him being enthusiastic and having great hair. I saw his name in the news from time to time over the years and was impressed by his accomplishments. He is gone too soon.

I have great memories of Scott. He was our paper boy on W Highland Rd, and every Halloween we would work up the courage to go to his house. He had the best decorations and made it so fun for us kids, always a good scare. I was just sharing this memory a few months back with his parents at the post office. Thank you for the memories... I still talk about you every Halloween. I was one of the Dulany girls that lived up the street. I am sorry to hear of his passing and send my condolences to his family.
