Thomas Blum Obituary

Thomas William March 20, 1955 - Blum

Husband, Father

and Friend.
"Love is Life •

Carpe Diem."

A man who lived his life with love, humor and resilience, Thomas William Blum, of Woodinville, WA. passed peacefully away on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025. During his last days, Tom remained surrounded by family and was wrapped in love. Born and raised in Syracuse, New York, Tom lived his life by his personal ethos of 'Carpe Diem!' His parents, Carl Bernard Blum and Lucy Michaluk Blum gave Tom a strong foundation. David, Tom's older brother, started Tom on his love of fishing. As an eighteen year old, Tom 'Seized the Day' and crossed the country to get an education, find opportunities and to begin his adult life. As Tom put it:
"I was born on March 20, 1955, but I started my life April 13, 1973 when I hopped on a greyhound bus to Seattle. In September of 1973, I moved into Bellarmine Hall at Seattle University. The next year I moved Maureen (Haggerty Blum) into Bellarmine. My life was growing fast! Over the years, Seattle became my life - school, work, family, friends, marriage and more family and more family. Maureen and I married in 1980, and have been friends forever."
Tom relished working with numbers in retail management, real estate and working at Snohomish County Assessor's office as an analyst. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Tom lived his entire life rooted in love, family, and quiet generosity. Tom was the first to marry in to the close-knit Haggerty family from Bellevue in 1980. With more weddings and additions to follow, Tom was the trailblazing 'In-Law', and welcomed his new In-Laws with his warm smile and great humor, and did so for 45 more years. Over the past twenty-two years, Tom's quiet joys were centered on his family and the small piece of heaven on Crystal Lake and the community tree farm. In the past nine years, Tom also embraced his ancestral Ukrainian culture and family connections to the soil of Berestechko, Ukraine. Through every challenge, he lived out both his 'Carpe Diem' motto and the Haggerty family slogan of 'Love is Life'. He joyously seized the good of every single moment, every single person and loved every single day of life that came his way.
Tom is survived by his wife, Maureen, his daughter Katie Coon, (Chris), and his granddaughter Lily May Blum Snyder, who brought him endless pride and happiness. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Lucy Blum and brother, David and sister, Nancy, and in-laws Sharon Haggerty Anderson and Larry Anderson. Tom's immediate family included his siblings, Linda Flannigan (Eddie), Charles Blum, Roger Blum and Mary Armstrong (Steve), a host of brother and sister in-laws, 24 nieces and nephews, 17 great nieces and nephews as well as his special Ukrainian family. Thank you to Dr. Song Zhao and Swedish Cancer Institute for the additional years you gave us with Tom.
Just seventy years young, Tom's warmth, welcoming nature, his resilience, and his wonderful smile and laughter will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Please join us in a Celebration of Tom's life on Saturday, June 7, 3:30 - 6 pm at Crystal Lake Clubhouse. You are invited to wear Tom's favorite color: red. In lieu of flowers consider donating to Tom Blum Memorial Fund via Venmo at Maureen-blum-2. The Memorial Fund will be used to commemorate Tom at Crystal Lake.

At the time of a loved"s one death we automatically recall memories of out times with them. Growing up in Syracuse NY following in the footsteps of Tom's 3 older brothers thru Sy Anthony's, then onto to CBA and to Lemoyne College set Tom's moral compass
Tom always had a compassion, an ability to discern, a talent to get to the heart of the matter----a good listener, an understanding heart
Cherished memories of a cherished brother....RIP Tom
