Walter Ames Obituary

Walter Glen Ames
Feb. 12, 1937 - Mar. 2, 2008

Walt Ames took his final journey to be with our Lord on Sunday, March 2, 2008. Through his final days, he was wrapped in the love of his family, and his wife was at his bedside as he passed.
Born February 12, 1937, in Arlington, Washington, Walt was the youngest of four children. He attended Arlington High School, class of 1955, and served in the United States Air Force through 1958. Walt met his wife of 49 years, Margaret (Nysether), in 1958 and they were married April 11, 1959.
In the early years of their marriage they lived in Renton. Washington and Everett, then moved to Seattle, Washington, in 1968, where they lived for 24 years. While raising their three children, Debbie, Doug and Diane, Walt enjoyed serving as a Little League baseball coach and participating in Boy Scouts activities, and summers were filled with family vacations and weekend camping trips.
Walt worked for the Washington State Department of Transportation for 24 years, retiring in 1991. Following retirement, he and Margaret returned to their Snohomish County roots, moving to Silvana, Washington, and then to Stanwood, Washington in 2007. Walt was very active in the church (Peace Lutheran, Silvana), and enjoyed league bowling, golf, and socializing with his many friends and family. He was also a big Huskies football fan, being a long-time season ticket holder. Always ready to help wherever help was needed, and always bringing smiles and laughter with a joke or mischievous prank, Walt was well-known and well-loved in the community.
Walt is survived by wife, Margaret; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Tim Spaulding; son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Caren Ames; daughter, Diane Ames; four grandchildren, Chris (Lindsey), Teresa (Mike), Becky, and Jeff; three great-grandchildren, Alaina, Margaret and Aidan (with a fourth on the way); and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by two sisters; one brother; and three nephews.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Walt will be sorely missed, but will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, March 7, 2008, at Peace Lutheran Church in Silvana.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the American Cancer Society or your local food bank.
Arrangements are under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood, Washington.

Family of Walter:
I was a classmate of Walter's at Arlington High School and a friend of his sister, Vera (Ames) Willow. Vera and her husband were both good friends and classmates of my late brother, Roy Aken. Bernard was the Best Man for my brother and we stayed friends until Vera's death.

Dear Diane, Margaret, Debbie and Doug,
I will always remember Walt's smile and laugh, the pleasure he took in playing a practical joke, the way he would tease me every time I pulled out the utensil drawer too far and spilled everything all over the kitchen floor (a weekly occurence it seemed). I have especially fond memories of the week I spent with you all in that great cabin at Maple Grove in the '70s. May your memories comfort you now and keep him with you always.
Love,
Lisa (a.k.a. "that Tandoo kid")

Aunt Margaret, Debbie, Doug, Diane and families - our hearts ache for the loss of Uncle Walt. He was special and we all have unique and treasured memories we hold dear in our hearts. In addition to our earlier memories, Soup Nights created an abundance of love as he shared those memories in a new light. We laughed until our sides hurt - that was Uncle Walt. We loved Uncle Walt with all our hearts and he will live on in our memories forever. With love and hugs to each of you - Lyle & Joanne, Carolyn & John, Catherine & Chuck, Linda & Wally and families
