William Charles Nicolay

1961 - 2017

Sept. 8, 1961-Aug. 19, 2017 Bill passed away on August 19, 2017, at his parents home under hospice and family care, after a lengthy illness. Bill was born to Rob Nicolay and Tommie Jean (Isham) Nicolay in Bellingham, Washington. Bill and his family moved often due to his father's employment with State Fish and Wildlife, living at rural sites around the State, this kindled his love of the outdoors and nature. He loved fishing and hunting, skiing, traveling and backpacking in the Olympics and on the Pacific Crest trail with his Dad. Bill also loved reading and learning, always placing at or near the top of his classes. His two highest passions in life were his family and the love of teaching. Bill received his Masters in Education degree from Western Washington University and set out teaching in the Snohomish School District. At Snohomish he taught English and History and also coached the Debate and Speech teams as well as Drama class. His Debate and Speech teams winning six state championships from 2011 - 2015, he was also named State Coach of the Year for Forensic Debate in 2014. Bill was always unassuming and humble and only spoke of the students gains and successes, he was very proud of his students. He also loved his drama group and they put on several successful plays. He was loved and respected by so many, his family has received so many wonderful comments from past students and fellow teachers and coaches. His intellect and wit and a wonderful sense of humor will never be forgotten. Bill is survived by his daughter, Sefi Nicolay of Bellevue, WA; parents, Rob and Tommie Nicolay of Woodland WA; sisters, Nancy Nicolay of Longview, WA, Lori Shepherd of Kalama, WA; aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews who loved him greatly. Rest in peace Bill, you will be missed by all.
