Hugh Reilly Obituary

Hugh Frances Reilly Jr., 89, of Fall River, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2017, surrounded by his family. He was the devoted husband of Elaine Paula (Pavent) Reilly. Born in Fall River, MA, on April 5, 1928, he was the son of the late H. Frank and Gertrude L. (Kelly) Reilly. A graduate of St. Anselm College, Mr. Reilly was the owner and operator of McKenzie Winslow Warehouse Company retiring in 2008. He enjoyed golf and was a former member of the Fall River Country Club. He was a member of the Serra Club and the Knights of Columbus and also proudly served as a trustee at the Fall River Five Cent Savings Bank. Hugh had a lifelong love of baseball. He was a gifted and talented pitcher who played on many local teams as well as for the Navy. Hugh was scouted by the Boston Braves but elected to attend college. Those who recall watching him pitch maintain that he was one of the greatest players in the region. Of all his many accomplishments in life, his strong faith and his love of family, particularly his beloved wife Elaine remained his pillars. Hughs children and grandchildren truly brought him an incredible sense of pride. His enormous presence and warmth will be greatly missed at family gatherings. Nobody could welcome you with a giant hug better than Hugh. Besides his wife of 63 years, he is survived by five sons, Hugh F. Reilly III and his wife Phyllis of Quincy, MA, Thomas P. Reilly of Fall River, MA, Andrew J. Reilly and his wife Christine of Randolph, MA, Jeffrey J. Reilly of Fall River, MA, and Joseph J. Reilly and his wife Melanie of Somerset, one daughter Ellen L. Bjornson of Somerset, MA, three brothers. James Reilly of Wheaton, IL, Joseph Reilly of Fall River, MA, and Edward Reilly of Marietta, GA, one sister, Mary Louise Lepore of Manhasset, NY, 11 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 9:00 AM from the Waring-Sullivan Funeral Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter Street, Fall River, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in Holy Name Church, 709 Hanover Street, Fall River. Burial will take place in St. Patricks Cemetery, Fall River, MA. Visiting hours are Tuesday from 5:00 | 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Boys and Girls Club of Fall River, P.O. Box 5155., Fall River, MA 02723. For directions and tributes: www.waring-sullivan.com.

A great father in law (and Mom in law too). Who welcomed their Jewish daughter in law with open arms and warm hugs. I remember jokingly asking him for his sons hand in marriage. He sweetly looked at me. Not knowing what to say. He was always so polite and a gentleman. Adoringly he said, it was ok for Hugh to marry me, but he can't become Hugh Reilly Speen the 1st. Thanks for the memories Dad.
