Elmer Totherow Obituary

Elmer Totherow FORT MILL - Elmer Jay Totherow, 86, of 1614 Old Nation Road, died Monday, November 30, 2015, at his home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Fort Mill Church of God, with the Revs. Bobby Johnson, Debbie Dykes and Mark Leonhardt officiating. Burial will be in Unity Cemetery. Elmer was the son of the late George Glen Totherow and the late Fannie Elizabeth Totherow. "Elmer's!" For over 50 years this is how dad answered the phone. Over the years this meant several things: Elmer's Little Store, Elmer's Sunoco/Pure, Elmer's Little Mart, Elmer's Used Cars, or just Elmer's home. With just a second grade education, dad was a powerhouse in Fort Mill. Not only did dad build and run several businesses but he was very involved in the Fort Mill Church of God. Over his life he held various positions including Youth Superintendent, drummer and even directed the choir. Dad's compassion was evidenced by all the people that he helped throughout the years. He has financed the building of several churches all over South Carolina, given college kids cars, buried people that didn't have money and so many other things. He was a mentor to many young men evidenced by all the guys that hung around his businesses. More than anything else, Elmer was a faithful husband, loving dad, awesome grandfather and proud great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Johnson Totherow; two sons, Ronnie E. Totherow and Eric L. Totherow; his daughter, Cindy Totherow Jackson; two brothers, Rathiel H. Totherow and Lewis Edward Totherow; his sister, Dorcas Moore; seven grandchildren, Todd Totherow, Cliff Totherow, Jaime Totherow, Tyler Totherow, Harrison Totherow, Stephen Jackson and Chris Jackson; six great-grandchildren, Chloe Jackson, Wyatt Jackson, Carter Jackson, Carcyn Jackson, Tegan Totherow and Russell Totherow. He is also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m. at Whitesell Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to www.fortmillfuneralhome.com.

Bought my 1st car from Mr. Totherow. Probably a day either of us ever forgot. A lady came straight ahead, in a turn lane, and almost hit me head on (I was stopped at a light to turn left and she was in turn lane to turn to her left, but came straight) during my test drive. I swerved and she just clipped the driver's side back fender/quarter panel. He was a very nice and helpful man. 1st person to give me a chance to build my credit-I was 19. My prayers go out to his family. May God give you strength, comfort and peace.

Fort Mill has lost a kind and benevolent man. He was very gracious to us when we planted Real Life Assembly as he has been to many other ministries. Prayers are with his family.

I will forever cherish the memories of our trips to the mountains when I was a small child. The memories I have when I would stay at your house and eat jars and jars of pickles...LoL...I remember the candy you would give me at the store you owned on the cornor.I will hold those memories and many more in my heart forever. I will miss coming to "surprise" you at the car lot when I would come to town and how you would act like you did not know who I was. You will truly be missed....I love you Uncle Elmer.....until we meet again.

Elmer Totherow was the greatest example of the American Dream I have known. He was my hero and mentor growing up.

Sitting on the front porch and talking to him was truly an honor in the short time that I was able to be around him. His quick wit and humor was undeniable. So was the fact that he was genuinely a great man and in what all I learned of him, he was a remarkable man. A legacy he passed on to a remarkable family. Each one from children, to grandchildren, to great-grandchildren, he was the patriarch of a truly great family and I know he was proud of each one. God bless.
