Columbia, South Carolina - Herbert (Herb) William Hamilton died on May 16, 2022 in Columbia, South Carolina following a battle against Parkinson's disease spanning more than twenty years. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, William (Will) Hamilton and Anne Fishburne Hamilton; his son and daughter-in-law, John Hamilton and Kara Bailey Hamilton; and his sister, Lendon Hamilton Noe, her partner, Alan Asnen, and her son, Allen Noe. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Smith Hamilton, and his parents, Francis (Bud) William Hamilton and Merilyn Jane Miller Hamilton. Born in Jackson, Tennessee on March 21, 1947, his early childhood was spent developing friendships he cherished throughout his entire life.
He received his undergraduate degree in engineering from Vanderbilt University, after which he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He remained in Columbia, South Carolina to attend the University of South Carolina School of Law.
While in Columbia, Herb met and married Ellen, began to establish his career in construction law, and to his greatest joy, was blessed with his two sons. The Hamilton family called Columbia home for over twenty years, after which they moved to Rock Hill, South Carolina. Herb embraced the tight knit nature of Rock Hill through his friendships, vibrant law practice, and community endeavors, especially active membership in First ARP Church. Despite relocation to Rock Hill, Herb's Columbia friends and former colleagues were never forgotten and remained dear to his heart. He was John and Will's biggest fan at their sporting events and occasionally had a bit of spare time for a round of golf. The consummate counselor, Herb mentored many a young lawyer, including Kara, through the early stages of their career and helped to guide and support those newly diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
His legacy of family, friendship, and community will continue through the two sons of which he could not have been more proud.
A memorial service is planned for May 25, 2022, 1:00 PM, at First ARP Church, 201 East White Street, Rock Hill, South Carolina 29730, which will include a virtual option. Immediately following the service, an outdoor gathering will occur at Haefele Farm, 1975 W. Main Street, Rock Hill, South Carolina.
