Carol Elsie Jakubs, 88, of Baroda passed away on Monday, Dec. 1, 2025, at A Place Called Home in Stevensville. A celebration of life service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 12 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 2673 W. John Beers Road, Stevensville. A private burial will be held in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Sodus at a later date. Friends may visit with the family from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph; as well as one hour prior to the service at the church. Carol was born on Feb. 10, 1937, in Sodus, to Carl and Eleanor (Leitz) Steinke. A proud graduate of Benton Harbor High School, Class of 1955, Carol immediately pursued her lifelong passion for nursing by enrolling in the training program at Mercy Hospital in Benton Harbor. Her dedication to helping others was evident throughout her remarkable nursing career.
In response to the community's need for hospice services, Carol was the first nurse who took the Hospice at Home training and became a hospice nurse for Berrien County and the surrounding areas. Through her tireless efforts and compassion, she touched the lives of thousands of patients and their families, providing them with the care and comfort they needed during challenging times.
Carol retired at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and commitment to loving care. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Carol is survived by her children: Janet (Karl) Price of Baroda, John (Paula) Jakubs of Berrien Springs, James (Melissa) Jakubs of Baroda, and Jerrold (Lucinda) Jakubs of Baroda; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Don Steinke; sister-in-law, Nadine Steinke; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Carl and Eleanor; grandson, David Price; brother, Fred Steinke; sister-in-law, Sally Steinke and niece, Rhonda Steinke.
