Charles Benya Obituary

Charles Paul Benya Sr., 81, of Eau Claire peacefully passed away on Nov. 4, 2025, at Corewell Health Merlin & Carolyn Hanson Hospice Center, Stevensville.

Born on Dec. 15, 1943, in St. Joseph, Charles was the second oldest of four children to Jacob and Rita (Stephens) Benya who preceded him in death. He graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1961 and later attended Lake Michigan College. Charles embarked on a remarkable career at Whirlpool Corp., where he dedicated more than four decades as a production supervisor. In July 1996, he retired early, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, loyalty and camaraderie.

Throughout his life, Charles was renowned for his unwavering work ethic, profound wisdom, and deep devotion to his family. He was a proud coach and player of Whirlpool's undefeated softball and bowling teams, where he forged lifelong friendships and shared his passion for sports. His enthusiasm for athletics extended beyond the field; he was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame football, faithfully following their seasons and celebrating their triumphs with immense joy.

Charles is survived by the love of his life, Sandy Fenderbosch. He also leaves behind his son, Dr. Charles "Chuck" Benya Jr. of Paducah, Ky., and his daughters: Jacqueline (Mario) Reich of St. Joseph, Julianne (Jim) Allen of Eau Claire and Tanya Fenderbosch of Austin, Texas. Charles will be missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Brittney (Jared), Gianna and Harper Knuth; Nicholas Reich; Joshua and Anthony Benya; and Taylor, Everson, and Sheridan Ingier; as well as his brother, John Benya of Baroda; his sister-in-law, Fran Benya and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his siblings: James and Kelley Benya.

To his children and grandchildren, Charles was an unwavering source of love and support. He placed family above all else, attending games, recitals, graduations and milestones with pride and enthusiasm. His home was a haven of warmth and laughter, where he imparted values of kindness, humility and perseverance to his loved ones. His legacy lives on in the laughter of his children and grandchildren, the stories shared by friends, and the enduring love of his family.

Beyond his immediate family, Charles leaves behind a cherished circle of honorary daughters, including: Paula Cerney, Julie Lischer, Dana Humes, Tracy Zona, Ally Egan, Kelly Reeves, Marcie Morrow, Sandy D., Tina Santarlas, Jeri Boomer and Jerilyn Mulholland.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hanson Hospice Center or Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan.

Chuck was nothing but kind, respectful, and fun to work with. I have thought about him often in recent years. I know that I and his other workmates would love to know about a celebration of life. He deserves that.

Yesterday

To the family of Charles Benya. So sorry to hear of his passing. Being a long time friend of Charles' mother Rita, watched her children grow up. It was a Christmas ritual during Rita's lifetime that at Chritmas Time I always made her a Cheese cake at Christmas time. She also always had a Christmas party and Dinner for her friends, which I always enjoyed so much. My continued prayers for his remaining family, especially for his younger brother John, to whom I was very close to, He was like one of my own children. Charlie may you Rest in Peace with your family loved ones who have gone before you.

Met chuck at Whirlpool about 10 years before I retired. He had just retired a few months before. Liked him from the start, always a great guy and supervisor. Glad to call him a friend. Rest in peace Chuck. My sincerest sympathy to the family.
