Robert Nichols Obituary

Robert Grant Nichols, 91, passed away on June 14, 2023, in Greenwich, Conn., after a brief illness.

Bob was born on Nov. 7, 1931, in Benton Harbor to Chester and Madolyn Nichols.

In his hometown, he met Carole Oelz, his beloved wife of 67 years.

He attended the University of Michigan and graduated with undergraduate and master of business administration degrees in accounting and finance. Throughout his life, he remained a passionate supporter of the Michigan Wolverines.

Bob loved his long career with Price Waterhouse (now Price Waterhouse Coopers). He was admitted to the partnership in 1967 and later served as co-chairman and deputy senior partner, retiring in 1992. Most of his career was devoted to serving large multinational corporations such as IBM and Caterpillar. Through Price Waterhouse, Bob and Carole met many lifelong friends and traveled the world.

Bob had a wonderful sense of humor and many hobbies and interests. Chief among these was golf. He was a member and president of the Royal Poinciana Golf Club, a longtime member of the Greenwich Country Club, and a former Laurel Valley Golf Club member. He was also an avid reader and provided wise counsel to his children, grandchildren and friends. Other interests include vegetable gardening, genealogy and travel.

Community service was also an essential part of Bob's life. He served as an elder and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich, and an elder at Moorings Presbyterian Church of Naples, Fla. He was president of the Creve Coeur Club, chairman of the board of the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce, and a director of the Pittsburgh Symphony. He also served on the Dean's Visiting Committee of the University of Michigan Business School for 10 years.

Bob is survived by his wife, Carole; two daughters: Beth (Blair) Crump of Darien, Conn., and Nancy (Brad) of Keller, Texas; daughter-in-law, Susanna Nichols of New Canaan, Conn.; grandchildren: Katherine Crump, Emily Crump, Thomas Orr, Jonathan (Rachel) Orr and Annie Nichols.

He was predeceased by his son, John and brother, Bill.

Bob was a devoted and generous husband, father and grandfather, and he will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a loyal friend and mentor. He lives on in our hearts forever.

A celebration of his life will be at 10 a.m. on July 19, at the First Presbyterian Church, Greenwich.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob's memory may be made to the Robert and Carole Nichols Scholarship Fund at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.

Carole, may the love of friends and family carry you through your grief at Bob's passing. I will always remember Bob as a friend and partner and remember you both for your graciousness towards Elinor and me whenever we were together.

My thoughts are with you.
