Thomas Patrick McCormick, 72, of St. Joseph passed away on Oct. 8, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on June 29, 1953, in Urbana, Ill., to Thomas and Jean McCormick, he spent his childhood in Gary, N.Y. and Springfield. Influenced by his father, a civil engineer, he developed a lifelong appreciation for construction. While studying accounting at Indiana University, Tom worked on bridge crews. After earning his CPA, he began a career in banking, ultimately serving as president of a regional bank.
In 1999, Tom founded Duneland Fine Homes, creating custom residences along the Indiana and Michigan lakefronts. His work reflected pride, craftsmanship and a commitment to community and he formed lasting friendships with the tradespeople he worked alongside.
Tom was devoted to community, serving on boards including Citizens Concerned for the Homeless, the Barker Welfare Foundation and other organizations such as the Share Foundation, Michigan City Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Corp. He co-founded Interfaith Community PADS, helped expand the Social & Learning Institute, and led the restoration of the historic Barker Mansion.
His significant contributions were recognized: the Barker Mansion movie room was renamed the Thomas P. McCormick Theater; Nov. 6, 2020, was declared "Thomas P. McCormick Day" in Michigan City, Ind., and the Artspace gallery was named the Thomas P. McCormick Art Center. He was the first recipient of the Barker Prize for exemplary citizenship, entrepreneurship and philanthropy.
After being diagnosed with ALS, Tom embraced the motto "Get busy living or get busy dying," choosing to live fully. He loved to travel, cherishing adventures in places like Kyoto, Yosemite and Hawaii. Tom's advice to lead with love and kindness, believe without doubt, and value "Holy Friends" as family reflected his generous spirit. He found comfort in faith and fellowship, especially through Sabbath School and Bible study. During his battle with ALS, Tom was grateful for the compassionate nurses who cared for him with grace and devotion, bringing comfort and dignity.
Tom is survived by his children from a prior marriage: Jennifer (Brett) McCormick and Ryan (Lauren) McCormick; his brother, Edward (Sandra) McCormick; grandchildren: Rory, Reid, Ellery and Chloe; nieces and nephews: Megan, Ian, Eric and Heather; and his wife, Katherine McCormick.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother and sister, Christina Schubert.
Tom requested no formal service, but his life will be celebrated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pioneer Memorial Church or ALS research organizations.
