Georgia A. Blackwood, age 92, affectionately known to her family as "Georgie" went to be with the Lord on July 16, 2017. She was born in Chapel Hill to the late Tom and Net (Papa and Andy). Georgia was one of ten children. After graduating from Chapel Hill High School, she worked many years at the old Huggins Hardware store. There Georgia met and would marry her husband of 51 years, Truett N. Blackwood. After many years of travelling with her husband and two daughters, she and her family settled in Durham. There Georgia worked as Clerical Administrator in the Radiology Department at Duke Medical Center. She was always proud and ready to tell you about her 22 year career there. Mom enjoyed a lifetime of cooking, gardening and loved being around her large family and circle of friends. Georgia led a Christian life and was a member of Temple Baptist Church for over 53 years. Early in those years, one of her joys came from teaching the Beginners Department. She demonstrated leadership, strength and independence throughout her lifetime.

Survivors include daughter Donavie Freeman, Grandson Doug, Great Grandson Kelton, Daughter Linda Hunnicutt (Stan), twin sisters Foye Crawford and Faye Johnson (Bruce), Betty Thompson (Dr. James), brother Billy Wayne (Bonnie). "Georgie" was loved and will be missed by all 23 nieces and nephews. Georgia was preceded in death by her husband Truett, her brothers Caswell (Marjorie), Harold (Dora), Richard (Barbara) and sisters Edna Tilley (Preston), Barbara Cheek (Milton) and brother-in-law Ernest Crawford.

The family would like to send their acknowledgements to Dr. Robert Patterson who cared for her for many years and to the members of the Duke Medical Center staff that contributed so much to the quality and longevity of her life.

Funeral services and burial will be on Friday, July 21, 2017 at Antioch Baptist Church, 1707 White Cross Road in Chapel Hill, NC 27516 at 2:00PM. A celebration of Georgia's beautiful life will follow in the church Fellowship Hall. Donations are welcome to either Antioch Baptist Church or Temple Baptist Church at 2121 Umstead Road in Durham, NC 27712.
