jacksonville, Florida - Kenneth G. Anderson (Ken), 90, joined his beloved wife, Imogene (Gene) and his Lord and Savior on October 12, 2021.
Ken was born April 15, 1931, at Durham, North Carolina. His parents Kenneth Anderson and Myrtle Lee Smith, predeceased him.
As the oldest of six children, Ken grew up in Durham in depression and World War II years. He graduated from Durham High School in 1949. He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (Phi Beta Kappa) working his way through college). He married Imogene Elizabeth Walker (Gene) at St. James Lutheran Church, Concord, August, 1953. They were married for 60 years. He went on active duty with the United States Air Force, in 1953 and was based in England. He returned a First Lieutenant in 1955 and began law school at George Washington University Law School. Ken received his Juris Doctor degree, with Honors (Order of the Coif and Law Review).
Ken was a trial lawyer with the Office of Chief Counsel, Internal Revenue Service at both Washington D.C. and Jacksonville, FL. In June, 1965 he joined the law firm (Culverhouse, Tomlinson, Mills, Anderson and Cone). He made partner in 1967. He formed his own law firm and a friendship and partnership with James P. Stevens (Anderson & Stevens, P.A). He practiced tax, estate and trust law through age 87.
Ken was active professionally as a member of the American, Florida and Jacksonville bars. He published in the George Washington Law, American Bar Association and the Duke Law Journals. He was a fellow in the American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel and an adjunct professor in the Master of Taxation (L.L.M.) Program, University of Florida Law School for 12 years.
He served as a board member of Big Brothers and Big Sisters; of Wesley Manor; and as a trustee and member of Lakewood Methodist Church. At Jacksonville University, he was a member of the board of trustees for 29 years and also Secretary to the Board. In 1971, he joined the Rotary Club of Jacksonville and was a board member, Club Treasurer and Club President (1980-1981) and a Paul Harris Fellow. He served as a trustee and then President of The Carl S. Swisher Foundation. He and Gene were members at San Jose Country Club for over 50 years and at Ponte Vedra Club and Ortega River Club. He and Gene enjoyed many foreign travels.
Imogene (Gene) predeceased Ken. Ken was survived by children, Melanie Anderson O'Leary (Joseph T. O'Leary, Jr.), North Grafton, Mass; Michael D. Anderson (Ginger M. Anderson), Wake Forest, NC; Kenneth G. Anderson, Jr. (Kara Julianne Anderson), Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Katherine Elizabeth O'Leary, Joseph Timothy O'Leary III, Mackenzie Danielle Anderson, Sara Frances Anderson; and great grandson, Ethan Paul Servidio, and beloved sister-in-law, Christina (Chris) Anderson (Durham) (John Q. Anderson, deceased); sisters: Mary Anderson Leggette (Durham), and Bird Anderson Baldwin (Pine Bluff, WY).; Gene's cousins, Gary Walker (Concord) and Barbara Ivey (Greensboro). His sister, Joan A. deHart and brothers, John and Roger, predeceased him.
A visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Monday, October 18, 2021 at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel, 4801 San Jose Blvd. Graveside services will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 in Maplewood Cemetery, Durham, NC.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lakewood United Methodist Church, 6133 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32217.
