Margot Christensen Obituary

Margot Christensen

November 26, 1949 - January 19, 2025

Cary, North Carolina - Margot Fletcher Christensen died January 19, 2025, after a courageous year and half battle with endometrial cancer, she was 75.Christensen retired from an award-winning career in public relations that saw her work for Peace College, the City of Raleigh, GEICO insurance at the corporate headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and for the last 27 years of her career as the director of public relations for the N.C. League of Municipalities. She was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on Nov. 26, 1949, the daughter of two Army officers Bill and Lucille, who were World War II veterans. She grew up in Tennessee, Alabama, Pennsylvania and Virginia, moving with her family as her father took jobs managing flooring plants. Margot attended her beloved University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she served as head of the Student Elections Board, chair of the Panhellenic Council, and where she was a co-winner of the Frank Porter Graham Award for the graduating senior who made the most outstanding contribution to a realization of the human ideals of equality, dignity and community. In her retirement, Margot devoted most of her energies as a volunteer career and image coach for Dress for Success Triangle, which helps prepare unemployed women for the workplace. Margot was a voracious reader, particularly of British mysteries, and has been known to read five mysteries in a single day at the beach. She enjoyed theater trips to New York City, visiting archeological sites, and has been a season ticket holder with the N.C. Symphony since 1989. Margot was both an excellent cook and enjoyed eating at nice restaurants. Giving her great joy were her two Welsh Cardigan Corgis, Cleo and Bryn. Her happy place was her cottage at the Chautauqua Institute in western New York, where she could pursue her intellectual, cultural and religious interests. She faced her illness with uncommon courage and grace. She was most worried about how her illness would affect others. Almost certainly, Margot, a lifelong Methodist, was buttressed by her Christian faith. In addition to her parents, Margot was predeceased by her brother Jim, Margot is survived by her her husband of 44 years, Rob Christensen of Cary, a former political writer for The News and Observer; her sister-in-law, Marilyn Fletcher of Durham, and Geoffrey, Amanda and Addie Fletcher of Apex, her nephew, niece and grandniece. Also surviving is Kenni Beam, her best friend for more than 50 years who has been a sister to her. A visitation will be held Feb. 1 at 11 am at Brown-Wynne Funeral home, 200 SE Maynard Road in Cary. A memorial service will follow at noon. I learned about Margot's passing from the UNC Alumni magazine. So sorry to learn that she passed away. She was my "big sister" at Phi Mu at Carolina. I last saw her in 2014, when Phi Mu celebrated the 50th anniversary of the chapter's founding on the UNC campus. My condolences to all of her family.
