Longtime Durham resident Marion C. Salinger, 100, died August 28 under the care of her daughters and Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester, Virginia.

Marion Casting Salinger was born May 22, 1917 in Buffalo, NY to George and Mary (Knopf) Casting. She began her studies in English and Journalism at the University of Buffalo, and majored in Germanic Languages and Literature at the University of Wisconsin.

Mrs. Salinger was for many years administrator for Duke University's international programs and grants, where she organized seminars and workshops abroad for university faculty members and public school teachers. Her particular interest was in Canadian Studies, and in 1985 she was awarded the Donner Medal for distinguished service to Canadian Studies in the U.S. Mrs. Salinger also focused on the field of forest resources pertaining to Canada and the U.S., for which she had many publications to her credit.

Nat'l Council for International Visitors (1993). She served as Executive Director of the Southern Atlantic States Assn. for Asian & African Studies; President, Triangle Chapter, Society for International Development; Trustee, Southeast Consortium for Int'l Development; and was past state President of P.E.O., an international philanthropic and educational organization. Mrs. Salinger was a longtime parishioner of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church; she and her family were among its founding members.

Surviving are her three daughters, Jill Salinger Winter of Leesburg, Virginia; Wendy Lang Salinger of New York City, NY; Jennifer Salinger Duffy of Oxford, Pennsylvania; and her grandchildren, Mary Fitzgerald Duffy (Kysela), Caitlin Salinger Duffy (Hall), and Liam Patrick Duffy. Her husband predeceased her in 1983.

A funeral liturgy will be offered on Monday, September 25th at 2:00 p.m. from St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, with the Rev'd Robert Kaynor officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard. I was just going through my father´s things and came upon this photo. He was a correspondence reporter and also worked for the Catholic Evidence Guild . From what I can tell, Mrs. Salinger did some
Work for them as well. My father was Wm. Paul Dearing, killed in the Empire State Building crash in 1945. He had this photo of her.

Remembering always with love, daughter Wendy

I met Marion when I first came to Duke in
1965. We struck a friendship that remained
all these years, enriched by her interests
and devotion to comparative international studies, and particularly her love for all things Canadian. She was a person of great charm and a smiling personality.
Knowing her was seeing Duke at its best!

Marion was a very dear friend--kind, generous, sensitive, and devout.
A poet who overcame many obstacles to develop a very successful professional career, without losing her classy gentility.
God bless her!

Wendy, I was so lucky (thanks to you!) that I had the deep pleasure and honor of meeting and having such a memorable experience with the great Marion. It was unforgettable watching Barack Obama give his keynote address at the 2004 Democratic Convention together while being served canapés and sherry in your hotel suite in Appalachia, NC., I had so much fun doing a little site seeing the next morning and continuing the conversation with you and your mother on the drive to back Durham and later in your home fortified by some more sherry! My sincere condolences to you, Jill and Jennifer. You must be very proud of your one-of-a-kind mother (and so accomplished!). Of course, she lived to be 100! much love,
Brenda

Marion was a tireless leader and organizer of the Hope Valley Renaissance Coalition and her efforts culminated in Hope Valley's National Register of Historic Places listing in 2009.

I'll miss her cheery countenance and steely determination!

I'll toast her with a glass of sherry on Monday.
